TAG Heuer Kicks Off Aston Martin Partnership with New Carrera and Formula 1 Special Editions

TAG Heuer announced its partnership with British luxury carmaker Aston Martin during last week’s Geneva International Motor Show, and, as we expected, the announcement of the first special-edition timepieces springing from the partnership were not far behind. Here’s what you need to know about the special Aston Martin editions of the TAG Heuer Carrera 01 and TAG Heuer Formula 1.

Fans of Aston Martin — most renowned for being the automobile marque of choice for Britain’s cinematic superspy, James Bond — will be happy to see that the watches are not simply standard models with a logo added but heavily influenced aesthetically by elements of the cars. The Carrera Heuer 01 Aston Martin Special Edition, for example, has had its movement skeletonized in a hexagonal pattern reminiscent of the grille detailing on an Aston Martin Vantage. In addition, the sides of 45-mm steel case have been enhanced with parallel “speed lines” that evoke a racetrack, and chronograph pushers that resemble a car engine’s pistons. Perhaps the most significant change to the Carrera case is found in the lugs, which have been reshaped to evoke the look of an Aston Martin’s bodywork.

The dial’s hexagonal pattern echoes the details on an Aston Martin Vantage.

The watch’s tachymeter bezel is made of black ceramic and engraved with an Aston Martin logo, and the caseback is made of black PVD steel and includes a sapphire window to view the movement, Caliber Heuer 01, a partially skeletonized version of the brand’s in-house, automatic chronograph movement, Caliber 1887. The movement holds a power reserve of 50 hours and is equipped with a column-wheel-driven stopwatch function whose readouts are arranged in a tricompax display on the opaline black, honeycombed dial: 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, and small seconds (with an added Aston Martin logo) at 9 o’clock. A date display appears at 3:30. The watch comes on a matte black rubber and specially embossed leather strap and is priced at $6,550.

The other new release comes from TAG Heuer’s more modestly priced Formula 1 series, which the company calls its “ultimate motor racing model.” The Formula 1 Aston Martin Special Edition is a quartz-powered chronograph in a 43-mm stainless steel case. The notched steel bezel is outfitted with an aluminum ring etched with a tachymeter scale and Aston Martin lettering. The tricompax black dial features TAG Heuer’s shield logo directly below 12 o’clock and Aston Martin’s winged logo directly above 6 o’clock. The latter logo, along with the lacquered, central chronograph seconds hand and the indices on the subdials and main minute track, are in the automobile maker’s special “lime essence” color, a shade also used in the contrast stitching on the black leather strap.

The three “azurage”-style subdials display the running seconds at 3 o’clock, a 1/10th-second chrono counter at 6 o’clock, and a 30-minute totalizer at 9 o’clock. The black gold-plated polished hour and minute hands, as well as the applied indices, are treated with gray Super-LumiNova. The movement — whose quartz oscillator enables the chronograph to be accurate to 1/10-second, hence the counter at 6 o’clock — beats under a solid steel, screw-down caseback engraved with “ASTON MARTIN SPECIAL EDITION” and the logo of Aston Martin Racing. The matte black strap, with its lime essence topstitching, represents the first time TAG Heuer has used a leather strap in the Formula 1 collection. The Formula 1 Aston Martin Special Edition will be priced at $1,550. Both  Special Editions will be available at retail in July, according to TAG Heuer.

Are larger straps available for the Aston Martin watch as the one I tried on was very small.

I bought mine in Gibraltar last year. They easily have the best prices in Europe and a brilliant collection too. Check out Antonio Diamond Boutique while you’re out there or call them for VAT-free delivery into the UK.

Nice watch – went into Tag Sydney and though I have what I would call an average size wrist, I found the strap to be very small – no possibility of adjustment nor no larger straps available hence I didn’t make the purchase – disappointed

My enemies will be left in envy with the smart and stylish luxurious watch, enhanced by the richness of the lime threaded piping.

Never cared for Jaeger additions which were costly. Tragically don’t care for these. Not unlike the digital clock in my DB9. Should have been special…not!

Similar to many others should be better with Aston Martin and Tag brand names. Best motor sport watch for me is the Chopard super fast chrono

Yawn! Yet another lazy tie-up between a Swiss watch brand and a luxury car manufacturer. Tag don’t really have a reputation to be sullied but AM do.

I love the Carrera Heuer 01 Aston Martin Special Edition with all it’s uniqueness and automotive flare!
I’m not a “fan” of the “lime essence” on the Formula 1.
    Both are exquisitely well done.

As an Aston Martin owner and a fan of Tag Heuer, I have to say two great tastes that don’t go great together….The bespoke of nature of the Aston would seem to lend itself to a more “bespoke” watchmaker. I understand this is about branding, but a Quartz watch seems out of place with the Aston logo as an earlier comment noted. Love both brands, don’t love the collaboration.

  16. Love the idea of a joining between 2 of my favourite brands, but quite possibly the 2 ugliest watches I’ve seen. The lugs don’t work with the strap, and why rubber? And look uncomfortable. It’s not a divers watch. The speed lines will catch dirt and need cleaning. And are those what pistons look like? Maybe on an Aston? Good to expand on partnerships but don’t lose the plot on the end product. Please!

  17. Another boring, three Dial chronograph, which looks like about 1000 others.

    The point would be?

Watches related to F1 must embody the design, technological and materials aspects of the sport. H
