Another New York Comic Con is in the books, and with it comes another round of superhero-themed timepieces from Citizen, which began a partnership with Marvel Comics and its parent company Disney in 2018. Following last year’s initial launch of eight men’s pieces, and the subsequent launch of the collection’s first ladies’ pieces concurrently with the release of the film Captain Marvel last March, two new limited editions made their debut at NYCC 2019: one celebrating Marvel’s 80th Anniversary, the other a historically inspired Spider-Man model marking the premiere of this year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home movie.
The Marvel 80th Anniversary edition, limited to 1,939 pieces, a reference to the company’s founding year, is the first in Citizen’s Marvel collection with a case made of Super Titanium, an alloy exclusive to the Japanese watch manufacturer, making it durable yet extremely light on the wrist. Its dark blue dial with a sunray finish is decorated with matte transparent prints of various Marvel logos spanning the company’s 80-year existence, from its humble beginnings as a struggling comics publisher to its modern incarnation as a global entertainment giant. The watch comes on a Super Titanium link bracelet and retails for $495.
The new Spider-Man timepiece’s limited edition number of 1,962 pieces is also a reference to a historical date, namely the year 1962, in which the web-slinger made his historic first appearance in the pages of AMAZING FANTASY #15. The full-color illustration of Spidey from that iconic cover is the central image of the dial, while the background, in contrasting gray, consists of a compilation of vintage Spider-Man comic book covers. The steel watch comes on a black leather strap with red stitching and is priced at $450.
Both watches are powered by Citizen’s Eco-Drive movements, which eliminate the need for the regular battery changes that most quartz movements require by their ability to be constantly recharged by any light source. Both will be available for purchase in November 2019. Citizen is also promising another special edition in honor of this year’s blockbuster Avengers: Endgame movie later in the fall.
