Piaget Polo S: A New Look and New Material for a 1980s Classic

The Piaget Polo watch, introduced in 1979, became an iconic timepiece in the decade that followed, capturing the style zeitgeist of the go-go 1980s. Piaget introduced new, titanium-cased versions of the Polo in its 30th anniversary year of 2009, and this week, launched the newest generation, the Piaget Polo S — a collection of five watches in new, distinctively shaped steel cases and outfitted with new mechanical movements.

The watches in the Piaget Polo S collection — unveiled at a global event in New York City on July 14 — are notable for their “shape within a shape” design, which marries a cushion-shaped dial opening with a classically round 42-mm case. All have sapphire exhibition casebacks to showcase the in-house, automatic movements, both of which were developed specially to equip watches in this new collection. All are outfitted with steel bracelets with integrated folding clasps.

Three of the watches are three-hand timekeepers with date windows at 6 o’clock, available in a trio of dial colors: silvered, blue, and slate gray. The three-hand Piaget Polo S contains Piaget’s Caliber 1110P, which is equipped with a slate-gray-colored winding rotor. Its case is 9.4 mm thick and water-resistant to 100 meters. The applied hour indices on the dials are treated with Super-LumiNova. The price for the three-hand automatic is $9,350.

The two chronograph watches in the Piaget Polo S collection have the same case diameter (42 mm) as the automatics, but are slightly thicker, at 11.2 mm. Offered with silvered or blue dial, they contain the automatic Piaget Caliber 1160P, which powers, in addition to the hours, minutes, and 6 o’clock date display, a chronograph with a central seconds counter, a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock. Like the three automatics, both chronographs have Super-LumiNova on the hour appliques and hour and minute hands. The Polo S chronograph is priced at $12,400.

  1. Echoes of Nautilus – in shape, dial stripe, bracelet.
    But cheaper.
    Why?
Piaget does not need to become a Patek to succeed, methinks…

You neglected to comment on the derivative styling, the resemblance to the Nautilus is remarkable. When you’re in the $10,000 neighborhood, some original design is expected.
