Last year Rado introduced a watch that has no crown, in which the wearer activates the functions and sets the time by touch. In my opinion, the Rado HyperChrome Ceramic Touch Dual Timer, with its easy-to-use second-time zone function, is a perfect travel companion as well as a great-looking watch. Discover how it works in this article from my blog, Watch-Insider.com.
Here is a user-friendly guide to how the Rado HyperChrome Ceramic Touch Dual Timer works: The watch has a high-tech ceramic case with six sensors; the two sides of the case are the active touch zones. The watch offers a second-time-zone function, which is synchronized with the main one. The first time zone is displayed on the main dial, the second one on the subdial at 6 o’clock. Activating the second-time-zone indication is always a two-step process, so as to avoid any unwanted changes to the main time setting. After activating the setting mode (see below), slide your finger along the left side of the case to change the hours, and on the right side to change the minutes in quarter-hour intervals. Fifteen minutes is the smallest difference between world time zones, and the quartz movement in this new Rado watch makes changing this interval exceedingly simple as well as ultra-quick. Quartz technology has made possible what cannot be achieved by a mechanical movement: a 15-minute leap forward or backward across time zones.
Here are some photos taken of the Rado Hyperchrome Ceramic Dual Timer at Baselworld 2014. Below them, you’ll find more detailed setting instructions for the watch.
Here’s how you set the main zone time, displayed on the main dial:
1. Touch the case at 10 o’clock until the minute hand on the main dial moves slightly. Immediately slide your finger along the right hand side of the case from top to bottom. The minute hand moves slightly again and the watch emits a small beep. Now the setting mode is activated, and the time on the main dial can be set.
2. To set the hours, slide your finger along the left-hand side of the case (clockwise = +1 hour, counterclockwise = -1 hour). To set the minutes, slide your finger along the right-hand side of the case (clockwise = +1 minute, counterclockwise = -1 minute). In order to keep both zone times in sync, the minute hand on both dials will move during the setting process on the main dial.
3. To confirm the time setting and deactivate the setting mode, touch the case at 10 o’clock (or at 8 o’clock for two seconds). The watch emits two small beeps. Setting mode is now deactivated and the time cannot be changed accidentally.
Here’s how you set the second zone time, displayed on the subdial:
1. Touch the case at 8 o’clock until the minute hand on the small dial moves slightly. Immediately slide your finger along the right-hand side of the case from top to bottom. The minute hand moves slightly again and the watch emits a small beep. Now the setting mode is activated and the time on the small dial can be set.
2. To set the hours, slide your finger along the left-hand side of the case (clockwise = +1 hour, counterclockwise = -1 hour) To set the quarter-hours (the minimum possible time-zone difference) slide your finger along the right-hand side of the case (clockwise = +1⁄4 hour, counterclockwise = -1⁄4 hour)
3. To confirm the time setting, and deactivate setting mode, touch the case at 8 o’clock (or at 10 o’clock for two seconds). The watch will emit two small beeps. Setting mode is now deactivated and the time cannot be changed accidentally.
One of the watch’s coolest features is that it also allows you to “swap” time zones. Here is how it’s done:
When the watch’s setting mode is activated for either dial, you can change the time on the small dial to that of the main dial, and the time on the main dial to that of the small dial. To do this, touch the case simultaneously at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock. The hands on both dials will move quickly to reset the times on each dial to that of the other.
