Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GoodPlanet

Omega‘s long association with the ocean began in 1932 with the invention of its first divers’ watch. In 2011, the brand partnered with the GoodPlanet Foundation, an organization founded in 2005 that promotes environmental awareness and sustainable development. The results of the partnership are evident in the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GoodPlanet.

Intended as a tribute to the GoodPlanet Foundation and its work to preserve and protect underwater ecosystems, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GoodPlanet has a distinctly maritime look, with a bold, blue lacquered dial with applied indices. The hour, minute and seconds hands are polished, faceted and rhodium-plated, and the central GMT hand is fashioned from aluminum. The hours and seconds hands and GMT hand are coated with a type of white Super-LumiNova that glows blue in the dark. The minute hand, and the dot at 12 o’clock on the unidirectional rotating divers’ bezel, are coated with another type of white Super-LumiNova that emits a green glow. The date appears in a window at 3 0’clock. The 24-hour GMT scale is printed in orange on the polished, dark blue bezel; the wearer can track the time in a second time zone using the scale and the central GMT hand. The brushed and polished stainless steel case, which also includes a diving-friendly helium-release valve at 10 o’clock, is a generous 43 mm in diameter and water-resistant to 600 meters. It features a domed sapphire crystal with nonreflective treatment on both sides. There is also a scratch-resistant sapphire window in the caseback, with “GoodPlanet Foundation” engraved around its periphery and offering a view of the watch’s movement. The movement, Omega’s co-axial Caliber 8605, features automatic winding and a three-level co-axial escapement with an Si14 silicon balance spring.

The watch is offered with either a stainless steel bracelet (price: $8,100) or an ocean-inspired blue rubber strap ($8,000). Omega has committed a portion of the proceeds from sales of each Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GoodPlanet watch to the Foundation’s project to preserve the mangroves and seagrasses in Southeast Asia and educate the local populace about safeguarding these natural resources.

In my opinion , this is one of the best looking omega watch. Love the classic look with the twist of the bright orange colour giving it a sporting look. The best thing is quality of the back. As many know, much work goes into the internal mechanisms however there after, all is then in-cased hinding all the great work. When you look at general skeleton watches, the prices are cheap and this generally mean if you see a skeleton watch, you soon think. Lovely watch however its probablity run of a meal watch. Clearly this watch will not give any one an opinion of a cheap skeleton watch. Maybe the designers can go that one step further and show the mechanism from the front therefore giving the first true skeleton omega watch. Love the donation element . Great watch and give something back. Quality. I will be looking to purchase this watch, once I have had time to save.

  3. This is an lovely piece of engineering, elegant, comes from a good stable, and is obviously a credible competitor with Rolex as both watches are around the same price. If I was spending $8,000 on a new watch, Omega would be my preference.

The bezel is actually bi-directional not uni-directional in order for the GMT function to work. Due to the GMT scale it no longer functions as a diver’s watch hence the reason the word “Professional” does not appear on the dial.

    • Hi Simon,

You are correct in what you are saying. The word ‘Professional’ being omitted on the dial is the indicator or giveaway that Omega does not intend for this model to be a dive watch. I guess Omega just wanted to still keep the 600m water proof rating because it is a Seamaster after all even though not all Seamasters are meant to be dive watches as in this case. Hmmm ironically though all Planet Oceans are meant to be dive watches !! Look at the bright side and realize that because of its depth rating, this is a very safe watch to swim with :)

How exactly is a 24 hour bezel a “divers’ bezel”? Also, I’m familiar with the co-axial movement, but what do you mean by ” three-level co-axial escapement”? Sounds like more marketing gibberish to me.

Some people have not follow in full the development of this kind of escapement. This is not more marketing giberish but telling you that the escapement has now three levels of contact, one of top of the other to increase reliability while increasing accuracy too, and incredibly, lesser amount of oil used for lubrication compared to other mechanisms.. This is what George Daniels intended to do originally but because Omega originally used an ETA ebauche, there was space/volume constraints that did not allowed for the three levels so they used only two levels. This movement, 8605, together with the 8500 and 9300 have three level co-axial because they were designed from scratch as co-axials. Hope this helps you to see more clear.

    • I can absolutely understand where you are coming from regarding your quote “How exactly is a 24 hour bezel a \”divers’ bezel\”?

You are correct. They should not be referring to it as a diver’s bezel because once its bi-directional you cannot safely use it as a reliable dive watch. If the bezel was to be accidently bumped and time added to the dive then you could be in all sorts of trouble !!

Nice. I do love Planet Oceans and Omegas in general.

I have one of the first ones that came out and it is exceptional, especially with regards to keeping time. It just keeps tuicking away. Better than my Rolex DateJust with regards to keeping the time.

Not that I would want to part with either you understand. ‘-)

Way back in 1956 or 1957, my Grandfather bought 2 Omega Seamasters, since then I have been in love with Omega.

Omega create fantastic watches, yet these watches are not ultra-expensive!

Thanks for the fine report and lovely pictures!
