COUNTDOWN TO WTNY:

Showing at WatchTime New York 2019: Arnold & Son Time Pyramid Tourbillon

WatchTime New York, America’s luxury watch event, is returning for its fifth consecutive year at midtown Manhattan’s Gotham Hall on October 25-26. With 37 participating watch brands set to showcase their latest and greatest timepieces, this year’s WTNY is shaping up to be the biggest yet. Among the watch maisons joining us this year is Arnold & Son, a brand that pays homage to the horological innovations of 18th-Century English watchmaker John Arnold. One of those tribute pieces, on display at the event, is the new  Time Pyramid Tourbillon.

With a design based on John Arnold’s historical, distinctive regulator clocks displaying hours, minutes and seconds on different axes, the Time Pyramid Tourbillon is equipped with the skeletonized Caliber A&S8615, whose pyramid-shaped tourbillon appears to float between two sapphire crystals. The movement is built on three levels, with its tourbillon and two power reserve indicators superposed by a sapphire disk that indicates the hour and a rhodium-plated ring for the minutes. Manually wound by a crown positioned at 6 o’clock, its gear train runs in a linear arrangement connecting the two barrels at 6 o’clock to the tourbillon escapement at 12 o’clock, and its bridges are deigned in a manner that the balance wheel, the mainspring barrel, and the other wheels are all visible from the dial side. The watch’s impressive 90-hour power reserve is indicated by dual indicators using blued steel hands, positioned on either side of the linear gear train, while the running seconds can be read off of the rotating tourbillon.

The Time Pyramid Tourbillon comes in a round 44.6-mm-diameter case made of either 18k rose gold (pictured above) or stainless steel (below), limited to 28 pieces each, and mounted on hand-stitched alligator strap. The movement is not only complex from a technical standpoint but decorated with haute horlogerie aesthetic flourishes, including chamfering on the bridges and three-spoke wheels, côtes de Genève on the satin-polished mainplate, mirror polishing on the tourbillon bridges and cage, and bluing on the screws. Prices are $39,995 for the steel model and $49,995 for the rose gold.
