Moritz Grossmann has embarked on an intercontinental roadshow with visits to Dubai and Tokyo in recent weeks. During the Japanese stopover on Mar. 7, the German brand introduced the Corner Stone collection that is made up of five new watches that feature a rectangular case construction. This case design is a first for Moritz Grossmann and the brand had to develop a new in-house caliber to fit the new dimensions.
There are three dial variants and two different case materials spread across the five new models that change the aesthetics of the watch quite dramatically. The different iterations are as follows:
- Solid silver dial with an opaline finish in either a rose (Ref. MG-002145) or white gold (Ref. MG-002144) case with matching numerals and appliques. The hands are heated to a unique violet-brown color. The small seconds display is square-shaped and there’s a recessed central area in a rectangle shape on the dial as well.
- Solid silver dial with black lacquer in white gold (Ref. MG-001910). The white Arabic numerals are printed and the hands are made of polished stainless steel. The small seconds display is round.
- White grand feu enamel dial in either a rose (Ref. MG-001950) or white gold case (Ref. MG-002142). The numerals, minute track, and small seconds are brown. The hands are heated to a unique violet-brown color. The small seconds is round. This model will be produced in a run of 25 pieces for each case material.
Out of these five models, I’m personally drawn to the white gold model with a black lacquered dial made of solid silver as it feels extremely professional and retains the white-collar appeal found in the Moritz Grossmann Benu and Tefnut ranges. The remaining watches, which I expect will be more popular among general enthusiasts, feel heavily informed by the Art Deco movement, whereas the black lacquer dial feels more like an original Moritz Grossmann design. I also have to say that the hands, all of which are handmade by the brand in its Glashütte manufactory, that are heated to the violet-brown color in the other four models are unlike any I’ve seen before.
Inside the rectangular case is Caliber 102.3 which Moritz Grossmann built specifically for the Corner Stone collection to accommodate the 29.5 mm by 46.6 mm by 9.76 mm case structure. The movement features a large barrel that allows for a 60-hour power reserve. It has been finished in customary Glashütte fashion with four Grossmann stripes applied horizontally to the two-thirds plate and a sunburst finish on the ratchet wheel. The balance cock is hand engraved as is the Moritz Grossmann branding. The movement uses the brand’s manufacture-made Grossmann balance with four inertia screws and two poising screws.
