Steve McQueen’s Rolex Brings Record $234,000

Steve McQueen’s Rolex Submariner Ref. 5512 brought $234,000 including buyer’s premium at Antiquorum’s summer sale in New York City yesterday, setting a world record for that reference. Another McQueen item, his Scott Super Squirrel motorcycle painted by Von Dutch brought the highest bid of the day at $276,000. The Heuer Monaco McQueen wore during the 1971 filming of Le Mans far exceeded the pre-sale estimate, selling for $87,600.

Other top performers included a Patek Philippe Ref. 5004 that brought $252,000 and an A. Lange & Söhne Tourbillon “Pour le Mérite” that brought $156,000. A Lange 1 Tourbillon in platinum sold for $144,000. Lot 299, a Patek Philippe Ref. 5250G Limited Edition Annual Calendar with Silicon Escape Wheel brought $138,000. A Rolex “double red” Sea Dweller with a Cartier dial sold for $91,200, and a Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona Ref. 6239 attained $84,000. All prices include buyer’s premium.

Overall the sale generated $5,706,324. Bids came in from around the world including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Italy, Germany, France and Romania. Eighty-one percent of the 416 timepieces were sold by lot and 122% sold by value. In addition to the bidders in the sale room and on the telephone, 478 bidders participated online.
