Back on the Race Track: TAG Heuer and Porsche Launch Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche

Seven Porsche watches in three years: with the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche, available in stainless steel and pink gold, the latest timepiece emerges from the partnership initiated in 2021 between the Swiss watch brand and the German sports car manufacturer. The automatic chronograph commemorates the 60th anniversaries of both the TAG Heuer Carrera collection and the Porsche 911 (originally known as 901).

Since its debut in 1963, the Porsche 911 has fascinated aficionados with its unwavering dedication to performance, precision, and innovation. Conceived by Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche, this legendary vehicle secured its spot in automotive history by achieving an astounding 0-100 km/h acceleration in a mere 9.1 seconds, showcasing engineering excellence.

The remarkable acceleration of the Porsche 911 not only captivated automotive enthusiasts but also underscored Porsche’s pursuit of performance and innovation. It paved the path for forthcoming generations of the 911, pushing boundaries and establishing new records for velocity and driving dynamics. Throughout six decades, it has continued to evolve technically while preserving the core essence of its initial design. The 911’s impeccable proportions, elegant contours, and vibrant character stand as a testament to a unique automotive heritage.

As a tribute to Porsche’s speed achievements, TAG Heuer introduces a new caliber in the Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche, the TH20-08 movement, a new spin-off of the in-house caliber TH20 launched at the Watches and Wonders 2023. Designed for precise measurements of short time intervals, it reflects Porsche 901’s acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds. The central stop seconds hand accelerates swiftly, gradually decelerates over 60 seconds, and quickly restarts. This design ensures accurate time measurements, with quarter-second definition in the first 10 seconds and half-second definition from 10 to 15 seconds, allowing for clear distinctions and enhanced precision of time.

The watch dial seizes attention with a visual depiction of velocity and acceleration. Red lines on the inner flange mirror the remarkable 0-100 km/h feat achieved in just 9.1 seconds, paying homage to the original Porsche 911. Further highlighting the automotive allure, additional subtle red accents grace various parts of the watch. The sub-dial at 6 o’clock incorporates a nod to 1970s automobile dashboards, where 50 km/h was often emphasized to signify the suggested speed within urban environments.

Another tribute to the rich sports car legacy is evidenced in the red sector of the sub-dial at 9 o’clock, reminiscent of the highest RPM (revolutions per minute) indicators on a vehicle dashboard. It serves as a reminder of the pivotal engine threshold beyond which potential damage might occur. Not to be overlooked, the watch hands take inspiration from the contours of a car dashboard, rounding off the harmonious automotive design aesthetic.

The Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche boasts the new double glass box feature TAG Heuer introduced on the occasion of the Carrera’s 60th anniversary at Watches and Wonders 2023. This pioneering concept offers cool views of the watch’s intricate mechanics from the case back, such as the oscillation mass designed to resemble Porsche’s iconic three-spoke steering wheel and adds a stunning effect to the front. The cases measure 42mm wide and 14.9mm thick.

Pricing is marked at 23,000 CHF for the rose gold variant and at CHF 9,000 for the stainless steel execution.
