Showing at WatchTime New York 2019: Seiko Presage SPB093 and SPB095

America’s largest luxury watch event, WatchTime New York, is returning for its fifth consecutive year at Midtown Manhattan’s Gotham Hall on October 25-26. This year’s event is shaping up to be the biggest yet, with 37 participating watch brands displaying their latest and greatest timepieces. Among these brands is Japan’s Seiko, which will be featuring among its many 2019 offerings the new Presage Arita Porcelain Dial models.

First unveiled at Baselworld, the two new models in the popular Presage collection were designed to highlight traditional Japanese craftsmanship through their dials, which are  made of Arita porcelain. Arita is a small town of about 20,000 people located on an island in southwest Japan that has been prized for its porcelain production for over 400 years. Seiko — which has in previous models used other traditional Japanese artisanal techniques, such as Urushi lacquer and verious enamels — had wanted to incorporate the material in its watchmaking for years but it couldn’t until three years ago, when a new type of Arita porcelain was developed that is more than four times harder and has the strength and rigidity needed to form the dial of a watch.

The two watches chosen to be equipped with the Arita porcelain dials are the SPB095, a time and date only model (above) and the SPB093, with a power-reserve indicator and date wheel (below). Both timepieces come in stainless-steel cases with a dual-curved sapphire crystal that has been coated in an anti-reflective material. The case of the SPB093 is 40.6 mm in diameter and 14.1 mm thick, while the SPB095’s case is only a smidgen smaller and more svelte, at 40.5 mm diameter and 12.4 mm thickness. The automatic movements in each watch come from the 6R family and are visible thanks to an exhibition caseback. Caliber 6R27 powers the SPB093 and offers a 45-hour power reserve, while Caliber 6R35 can be found in the SPB095 and offers a 70-hour power reserve. The SPB093 is priced at $1,900, while the SPB095 is priced at $1,700.

“Arita is … located on an island in southwest Japan …” Hilarious(I live in Japan on the same island you make mention of. Kyushu is the third largest island in Japan).

Nevertheless, beautiful watches. I particularly like the blued hands and the combining of Roman and Arabic numerals.
