Roger Dubuis Introduces Hommage Minute Repeater Tourbillon Automatic

Roger Dubuis Hommage Minute Repeater Tourbillon AutomaticThe new Roger Dubuis Hommage Minute Repeater Tourbillon Automatic, unveiled at the Watches and Wonders Fair in Hong Kong, features a trio of technical attributes: a minute repeater with new gongs, a flying tourbillion with a new cage, and twin micro-rotors in hand-guilloché rose gold. Let’s take a closer look.

Minute repeaters originated long before either electric lighting, or luminous markings on dials and hands, were invented. By sounding distinct notes for the hours, quarter hours and minutes, they allowed the owner to “hear” the time in the absence of light. Today, this functionality is no longer required, but collectors appreciate fine minute repeater watches as paragons of the watchmaking art.

The slide at 9 o’clock activates the minute repeater.

The Roger Dubuis Hommage Minute Repeater Tourbillon Automatic showcases gongs designed to improve the quality of the chime thanks to a combination of a new shape – square rather than the traditional round, and new materials. The in-house caliber RD104 movement also incorporates a silent centrifugal-force striking dissipator that controls the speed of the strikes to ensure a long, clear chime. The flying tourbillon incorporates a new carriage designed to guarantee optimal inertia, equilibrium and anti-shock protection. Like all movements produced by Roger Dubuis, the caliber RD104 bears the Poinçon de Genève. The company relates that 328 of the 1,241 hours devoted to manufacturing the movement are dedicated to meeting the Poinçon de Genève criteria.

Visually, this piece bears the distinctive traits of the Roger Dubuis Hommage collection. On the exterior, these include a sunray guilloché motif on the dial, leaf-type hands pointing to Roman numerals, a concave bezel and broad inner bezel ring, and a limited-edition number engraved on the case side. Much of the multi-layer movement is visible, creating a 3D effect. The owner can also witness movement components in action when the striking mechanism is engaged. A sapphire caseback allows the movement to be admired from both sides.
