Frost on the Oak: Audemars Piguet Carolina Bucci Limited Edition Royal Oak Frosted Gold

Audemars Piguet celebrated 40 years of Royal Oak for women in 2016 by enlisting Italian jewelry designer Carolina Bucci to design a new version of the iconic timepiece in a shimmering “frosted gold” case. Those models, in rose-gold and white-gold case options, featured the Royal Oak’s well-known “Tapisserie” patterned dial. This year, AP has once again teamed with Bucci for another special edition, this time applying the “frosted” finish to yellow gold — the Florentine designer’s favorite version of the precious metal — and replacing the traditional “Tapisserie” dial with a shiny, mirrored one never before seen in the collection.

The case of the new Carolina Bucci Limited Edition Royal Oak Frosted Gold, a limited edition of 300 pieces, measures 37 mm in diameter, matching the dimensions of the larger of the two versions released in 2016 (the smaller was 33 mm in diameter). The case’s “diamond dust” sparkling finish is achieved by hammering the gold with a diamond-tipped tool to create tiny indentations — a process that dates back to ancient Florence. The silver-toned mirror dial, under a glareproofed sapphire crystal, has appled indices and luminous-treated hands in the classical Royal Oak Style. Another sapphire crystal in the caseback offers a view of the self-winding movement, with a 3-Hz frequency and a 60-hour power reserve.

The sparkling finish on the case comes from an ancient Florentine hammering technique.

On her choice of the mirrored dial for her second collaboration with Audemars Piguet, Carolina Bucci says: “With the first Frosted Gold design, I took the perfection of the Royal Oak case and bracelet and “roughed them up” a little, juxtaposing the perfectly imperfect Florentine finish with Swiss watchmaking precision. Now I’m doing the opposite, taking the textured surface of the “Tapisserie” dial and flattening it out into a perfectly smooth mirror.”

The 18k yellow gold bracelet boasts the same hammered finish as the case and closes with a traditional AP folding clasp.  The newest Frosted Gold Limited Edition is priced at $53,600.
