Somewhat synonymous with the rise of railroad transportation is the precise timekeeping that kept trains operating efficiently. In the second half of the 19th century, modern steam locomotives, which replaced horse-drawn wagons, conquered one territory after another. This development was then accompanied by a skyrocketing demand for precise clocks that helped organize the complex timetable of modern transportation.
Hamilton’s pocket watches, known for their accuracy and legibility, were up to the task. Commemorating these precise historical timekeepers, the Swiss brand with American roots launches the new Railroad Pocket Watch. The piece is a limited edition of 917 pieces featuring a hearty 50mm steel case. Its white, enamel-like dial echoes those of vintage railroad timepieces, with red 5-minute increments along a fully graduated, outer minute track. Atop the main dial are oversized Arabic numeral indices, black lacquered hands, and a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock.
A closed caseback features a special engraving of a train and the words “130th Anniversary Railroad Special” in commemoration of Hamilton’s founding in 1892. Inside the timekeeper beats a hand-wound movement, the ETA 6497, with 50 hours of power reserve.
The Hamilton Railroad Pocket Watch hangs from a removable chain while a leather travel pouch completes the vintage-inspired look and feel of the watch. Pricing is marked at $1,395.
