Cuervo y Sobrinos Introduces 1950s-Inspired Historiador Chronograph Written byMark BernardoDecember 19, 2012 Cuervo y Sobrinos is unique among Swiss watch brands in that it is the only one founded in Cuba, and even recently opened a flagship boutique in Havana. Many of the company’s modern timepieces are based on designs from its pre-embargo heyday, including, most recently, the first chronograph in its Art Deco-inspired Historiador collection. The Historiador Cronotiempo, like its predecessors in the collection, has a stainless steel case whose silhouette echoes those of Cuervo y Sobrinos models from the 1950s. It is 41 mm in diameter and has a double-curved sapphire crystal, another hallmark of the era. The crown cover is engraved with “1882” — the year of the brand’s founding — and the chronograph pushers are in the “plunger” style. The case is water-resistant to 30 meters and features a screw-down exhibition caseback. The watch contains an automatic chronograph movement based on a Dubois-Depraz 2025, which has 47 jewels and a power reserve of 40 hours. The rotor is personalized with the Cuervo y Sobrinos logo. The chronograph has a central seconds hand, a 30-minute subdial at 9 o’clock, and a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock. Small seconds are on a subdial at 3 0’clock, which also has the CYS logo. The watch’s other notable feature is its large date, in a window at 12 o’clock and framed (when the chronograph is at zero) by the big, arrow-shaped pointer of the central seconds hand, which makes it easy to read at a glance. The watch is available with either a half-matte black or ivory dial, both of which have a red tachymeter scale (labeled here in Spanish, “Taquimetro,” a nod to the brand’s Latin heritage). The black version has a red arrow pointer; the ivory version has a black one. Both watches come on Louisiana alligator leather straps (black for the black dial, brown for the ivory dial) with steel deployant buckles. The price is $4,950.
