Swatch and Omega's New MoonSwatch Marks a Solar Eclipse, One Detail at a Time

Swatch and Omega mark the August 2026 solar eclipse with a new MoonSwatch — a small, deliberate update to a watch that's become an institution in its own right.

Since March 2022, the Bioceramic MoonSwatch has redefined the relationship between Swatch and Omega: more than 30 interpretations of the Speedmaster Moonwatch, built from Swatch's proprietary Bioceramic material, have turned a corporate collaboration into a sales phenomenon with lines that stretch for days. Now one of the collection's eleven base models, the yellow Mission to the Sun, gets a thematic follow-up: the Mission to the Sun – Solar Eclipse (ref. SSX01J100-1).

The occasion is the solar eclipse of August 12, 2026, whose path of totality crosses parts of Spain — and it's there, for one day only, that the new version goes on sale.

A Single Pusher Carries the Theme

Set the Solar Eclipse next to the standard Mission to the Sun (ref. SO33J100) and you'll need a second look. The yellow Bioceramic case, the recessed white sub-dials, the orange hands, the tachymeter bezel with its signature "dot over ninety" — all unchanged. The one immediately visible difference sits at 2 o'clock: a black Bioceramic pusher replaces the usual yellow one, standing in for the moon passing briefly in front of the sun. On the caseback, hidden under the strap and rarely seen in daily wear, a new-moon graphic decorates the battery cover — a reminder that a solar eclipse is only possible with the moon in exactly that phase. Anyone hoping for a mechanical or technical addition — a moon-phase display like the collection's Snoopy editions, or gold plating in the style of the Moonshine Gold pieces — will come away disappointed. Swatch and Omega have kept this to small cosmetic changes on a case that's sat largely unchanged in the lineup for more than four years. Given how rare the underlying event is — a total eclipse typically doesn't return to the same region for several centuries — the design effort here reads as fairly modest by comparison.

Familiar Engineering, Familiar Dimensions

The case itself hasn't moved: 42mm in diameter, 13.25mm thick, 47.3mm lug-to-lug — the proportions that define the MoonSwatch line, slightly larger than the original Speedmaster they reference. The double-domed crystal keeps its scratch-resistant coating and etched "S," and water resistance holds at 3 bar (30 meters) — fine for daily wear, though well short of what you'd expect from a chronograph with sporting pretensions. Like all eleven base models in the collection, the Solar Eclipse runs on a quartz chronograph movement; the hour and minute hands and the hour markers carry Grade A Super-LumiNova in green.

The strap offers a second point of difference from the core model: a white, softer rubber strap with a velcro closure, yellow lettering, and a yellow Bioceramic loop, in place of the standard model's slightly stiffer strap with black lettering.

A Release With a Geographic Catch

More unusual than the watch itself is how you buy one. The Mission to the Sun – Solar Eclipse is available exclusively on August 12, 2026 — and only in Spain. The official webstore accepts delivery addresses within the country only, supplemented by three selected Swatch boutiques in Bilbao, Ibiza, and Valencia. Alongside that, a "Rolling Planet" tour makes a stop in León, with sales windows running from noon to 2 p.m. in the city center and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones. The price is €280, about $320.

As with every MoonSwatch release, purchases are limited to one watch per person, per day, per store.

The Solar Eclipse fits a strategy Swatch and Omega have followed since the collection launched: rather than developing new movements or complications, the appeal of the MoonSwatch is generated through limited runs, seasonal tie-ins, and narrow sales windows. Commercially, it works — resale prices on earlier special editions bear that out. In substance, though, the Solar Eclipse sits closer to a merchandising item tied to a natural event than a watchmaking response to one. Anyone looking for a meaningful evolution of the MoonSwatch concept won't find it in a pusher and a caseback print. Anyone already drawn to a Mission to the Sun with added collector's value through exclusivity gets a reasonable option on August 12 — provided the logistics of buying one can be worked out.
