Omega Introduces a New Generation of the Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon

Twelve years after the debut of the original model, the brand enriches its ceramic Speedmaster collection with new editions featuring refined proportions, reworked cases and dials, and state-of-the-art Master Chronometer movements.

Omega once again invites watch enthusiasts on a journey to the Moon — the dark and gray side, as Speedmaster fans like to call it. More than a decade after the first ceramic Speedmaster made its debut at Baselworld in 2013 with a two-register layout, the brand unveils three new interpretations of the now-classic Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon. Honoring the Apollo 8 mission that took place in 1968 with the crew wearing Speedmasters and astronaut Jim Lovell’s legendary words "we’ll see you on the otherside”, these latest editions — in all black, black with a red seconds hand, black with white and red details, and a new Apollo 8-inspired gray — bring refined proportions, sleeker ceramic cases, cool dial updates, and Master Chronometer-certified movements, both self-winding and hand-wound to the collection. They are available on newly designed rubber and fabric nylon straps equipped with ceramic foldover claps.

The classic Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon, ref. 310.92.44.51.01.004, features a case in polished-brushed black ceramic which retains the previous diameter of 44.25mm, as all the newcomers, but has a sightly reduced height of 15.09mm. The polished bezel is also made from black ceramic, with its tachymeter scale in the patented Liquidmetal. Beneath the box-style sapphire crystal, the polished ceramic dial, which is now stepped around the outer edge and has a laser-brushed finishing, includes a small-seconds display at 9 o'clock, a 60-minute and 12-hour counter at 3 o'clock, and a date window at 6 o'clock. All sub dials are slightly recessed, adding depth to the dial. The hour and minute hands, as well as the bevelled indexes and sub dial hands, are crafted white gold and filled with light green Super-LumiNova which admits a green glow in the dark. The central chronograph hand sports a red tip.

The real evolution takes place inside, with Omega finally christening the collection with Master Chronometer-certified movements. Here, we talk about the Caliber 9900 with column-wheel operation, Co-Axial escapement, and silicon balance-spring. Two barrels mounted in series allow for a power reserve of 60 hours. The movement features the familiar rhodium plated finish with Geneva Waves in arabesque which can be admired through the sapphire case back.

Pricing is marked at $15,700 excluding taxes.

The all-black version of the Speedmaster Dark Side of The Moon – ref. 310.92.44.51.01.005 with rubber strap and ref. 310.92.44.51.01.003 with fabric strap – shares all the features of the black-and-white model. True to its name, its dial is a truly dark tone, finished with laser sandblasting.

Last but not least, Omega introduces an execution with a red seconds hand that kind of merges the personalities of the above-mentioned references, with one big difference though: The ref. 310.92.44.51.01.001 is powered by a hand-wound movement. Visible through the case back, the Co-Axial Master Chronometer caliber 9908 has also been given a special “Black Edition” finish on the main plate with Geneva Waves in arabesque. However, the 9908 shares the most important details with its self-winding counterpart, a silicon-balance spring and a power reserve of 60 hours stored in two barrels mounted in series. Thanks to the slimmer dimensions of the movement, the 44.25mm case measures only 13.02mm thick.

Inspired by Apollo 8 astronaut Jim Lovell’s words that “the Moon is essentially grey,”  the new Grey Side of the Moon reimagines the skeletonized, moon-textured dial of previous Apollo 8 models in a full gray color way, forgoing with the previous yellow accents. The 44.25mm case is crafted from polished and brushed gray ceramic, 12.97mm thick, with a matching brushed bezel featuring a laser-engraved tachymeter scale filled with Super-LumiNova. The skeletonized dial with a three-register layout continues the gray motif with tone-on-tone minute flange and counters, while the applied markers and hands are filled with white Super-LumiNova for clear legibility.

Beneath the sapphire crystal sits the beautifully skeletonized hand-wound caliber 3869 "Gray Edition", an evolution of the classic Moonwatch movement, now featuring a gray coating. This Master Chronometer-certified engine incorporates a Co-Axial escapement, silicon hairspring, and a 50-hour power reserve. The visible main plate bears a laser-ablated lunar surface pattern reminiscent of previous Apollo 8 special editions.
