Jaeger-LeCoultre 101 Secrets: Time, Concealed 

With the 101 Secrets, Jaeger-LeCoultre draws on two historical threads from its own archives: the Caliber 101, produced since 1929, and the tradition of "secret watches" from the 1920s. The manually wound mechanical movement is considered the smallest rectangular mechanical caliber in the world. This new execution pairs it with a concealed dial and a bracelet entirely set with gemstones. The watch is presented in pink gold with pink sapphires, in a limited edition of three pieces.

A Caliber With History 

The Caliber 101 traces back to the Duoplan construction, patented in 1925, in which the escapement sits on one level while the barrel and going train are arranged on another. This layout reduces the space required by the movement and allows winding via a crown set into the case back. The original 1929 caliber measures 14mm in length, 4.8mm in width, and 3.4mm in height. With a volume of just 0.2 cubic centimeters, it consisted of 74 components and weighed barely a gram. The balance oscillates at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), with a 33-hour power reserve. Today, the Caliber 101 is produced in its fifth generation and comprises 98 components. Given its minute dimensions, each part is hand-adjusted and hand-assembled. Jaeger-LeCoultre states an assembly time of roughly 40 hours per movement, which keeps annual production limited to a few dozen pieces.

The Return of the Secret Watch 

Stylistically, the 101 Secrets also references the Manufacture's historical "secret watches." On the early models, a hinged cover concealed the dial. This new interpretation carries that principle over to the bracelet instead. A pusher set below the dial opens a section of the bracelet to reveal the time; releasing the pusher closes it again. The clasp, too, is fully integrated into the construction and invisible from the outside. Case dimensions come in at 29.07 x 12.22 x 9.88mm.

Pink Gold and Pink Sapphires 

The double-row, rivière-style bracelet is crafted in 18-karat pink gold and set with 124 pink sapphires. The stones span ten sizes and seven color gradations, ranging from deep pink to pale blush. A row of white diamonds separates the two sapphire rows. The case flanks are likewise set with sapphires and diamonds. Beneath the hinged bracelet section sits a white mother-of-pearl dial, framed by a rectangular pink gold bezel set with a further 904 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling approximately 13.26 carats. The gem-setting is carried out in-house at the Métiers Rares atelier and, according to Jaeger-LeCoultre, requires 163 hours of work in total.

Two Traditions, One Watch 

Mechanically, the 101 Secrets stays true to the core principle of the Caliber 101: it displays hours and minutes only, with no additional complications. The focus instead rests on extreme miniaturization, the concealed opening mechanism, and the gem-setting. By combining a hidden time display with the Caliber 101, Jaeger-LeCoultre brings together two defining elements of its watchmaking history in a haute joaillerie piece limited to three examples.
