Genius or a Letdown: What Collectors and Industry Insiders Really Think of Swatch × Audemars Piguet

Enthusiasm, scepticism from collectors, and sharp strategic analysis from industry observers — the reaction for Audemars Piguet x Swatch is remarkably nuanced.

Few collaborations have left as lasting an impression on the watch world in recent years as those between Swatch and heritage luxury brands. Since the MoonSwatch, one thing has been clear: partnerships like these can be far more than short-term marketing plays. They shape perception, fuel desire, and can even redefine what access to luxury looks like.

With the new collaboration between Swatch and Audemars Piguet, the conversation reaches a new register entirely. Because unlike many of Swatch's previous partners, Audemars Piguet occupies a particularly rarified world — defined by limited production, steep entry prices, and a brand identity built, above all else, on exclusivity. The reactions, predictably, have been charged. Between genuine enthusiasm, scepticism from long-standing collectors, and sharper strategic assessments from industry observers, the picture that emerges is a remarkably considered one.

“Based on what we saw with MoonSwatch, these collaborations tend to boost interest in the original rather than hurt it. Speedmaster sales went up meaningfully after that launch, and I’d expect something similar here: a Swatch is not a replacement for a Royal Oak. If anything, it just creates more future Royal Oak buyers.”

Joshua Ganjei, CEO European Watch Company

We also canvassed a number of collectors for their views:

"As an accessory — particularly for women — I actually think it's quite cool. I don't think it'll move huge numbers, but that might be exactly where its charm lies. A little bit special, fashion-forward, and more for the person who wants something different." — Andreas W., collector

"For me, a collaboration like this doesn't really increase desirability for the brand. If anything, it takes away something of the specialness I originally associated with it." — Leo S., collector

The WatchTime Editorial Team Weighs In:

"The new collaboration between Audemars Piguet and Swatch is simply fun. The whole bag charm and collectible frenzy has found its way back into the watch world — and honestly, that's exactly what I love about it. It reminds me of the collectible crazes of my teenage years: those little objects that everyone suddenly wanted because they had personality and sparked conversation. I think it's wonderful that watches can still be part of that culture — especially at a more accessible price point. I'm curious to see how it unfolds. I won't be queuing outside a store, but I'd happily wear one. I'll try my luck in a few weeks. My personal favourite: the white model with the coloured screws." — Daniela Pusch, Unit and Editorial Director, WatchTime

"This Swatch collaboration translates the original spirit of the Royal Oak into a new set of consumer codes. Less reverence, more ease. More extroverted, more playful. Less safe, more street. And perhaps that's precisely where its greatest strength lies. It takes the watch seriously enough to respect its history, but not so seriously that enjoyment becomes impossible. While other luxury brands continue to engineer artificial distance, Swatch has grasped something the fashion world understood long ago: people today don't just want to own objects — they want to visibly fold them into their daily lives. Creatively, individually, and without complication." — Johannes Beer, Junior Editor, WatchTime Germany

"What makes the Swatch x Audemars Piguet collaboration particularly compelling is its cultural positioning as much as its accessibility. By reimagining the product as a pocket watch, it moves beyond traditional watchmaking codes into the realm of collectible accessory; something to be styled, displayed, and worn in a more personal, expressive way. In a moment where trends like bag charms and customisation are shaping consumer behaviour, this feels incredibly timely. It allows a maison typically operating at a £50k average price point to engage a much broader audience, creating genuine excitement while building long-term aspiration without diluting the core of the brand."
