Motorheads: Seiko Revvs Up with Prospex Speedtimer Datsun 240Z Limited Edition

The three limited-editions–a mechanical chronograph, an automatic time-and-date model and a solar chronograph–are inspired by the Datsun 240Z, with design elements echoing the Japanese race car’s chassis in red and black tones and dials displaying different styles of the Datsun logo.

Precision Meets Performance

At first glance, the connection between wristwatches and sports cars might not be obvious due to their difference in scale. Yet upon closer inspection, the parallels are striking. Both rose to prominence in the 20th century, driving engineers and watchmakers alike to pursue new heights of innovation. They each pushed the boundaries of performance, became symbols of progress, and continue to captivate with their precision, design, and charisma. Even in today’s era of real-time telemetry and advanced tracking systems, where lap times and sector splits are broadcast live, the influence of horsepower remains deeply ingrained in the world of high-end sports watches. Many watch brands—whether currently involved in motorsport or honoring their past—commemorate legendary racing moments through special edition timepieces.

Seiko’s latest tribute in this arena comes in the form of three new limited-edition models added to the Prospex Speedtimer collection. Let’s not forget that the Speedtimer holds a special place in watchmaking history. Introduced during the golden era of motorsport in 1969, it was among the very first automatic chronograph watches—a groundbreaking achievement that cemented Seiko’s reputation for innovation and precision on and off the track. Fittingly, the newcomers celebrate the iconic Datsun 240Z rally car, one of the hottest race cars and a symbol of Japanese engineering excellence that left its mark on the motorsports world in the early 1970s. In 1971, adorned with the Seiko logo, this car with No.11 on its side conquered harsh terrain as it raced 6,200 kilometers to victory in the East-African Safari Rally, widely regarded as one of the toughest races in the world.
Each model in the DATSUN edition draws inspiration from the Datsun 240Z’s distinctive design, featuring red and black color schemes reminiscent of the car’s body and dials that display different iterations of the Datsun logo. Naturally, each of the three watches—a mechanical chronograph, an automatic time-and-date model, and a solar-powered chronograph—is equipped with an in-house movement, showcasing the full range of Seiko’s technical prowess.

As the flagship model of this special collection, the Speedtimer Mechanical Chronograph DATSUN Limited Edition SRQ057 channels the spirit of motorsport’s golden age and brings the legacy of the legendary Datsun 240Z directly to the wrist. The typography used throughout—most notably on the tachymeter scale, here etched into the bezel in contrast to the regular Speedtimer where you find it on the flange, draws direct inspiration from its cockpit. The motorsport cues continue across the black dial with a tricompax layout, which is luminescent thanks to Seiko's LumiBrite coating and protected by a double-domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and onto the caseback, where a detailed engraving denotes both the individual serial number and the model’s limitation of just 500 pieces worldwide.

Measuring 42.0mm in diameter and 14.6mm in height, the case is coated with titanium carbide for enhanced robustness and water-resistant to 100 meters. Inside beats the in-house Caliber 8R48 equipped with a column wheel and a vertical clutch, which ensures a smooth start, stop and reset of the stopwatch function. The self-winding movement with a power reserve of 48 hours boasts a bidirectional automatic winding with Seiko’s signature Magic Lever.

The Speedtimer Mechanical Datsun 240Z Limited Edition SPB517 sets the stage with a well-balanced stainless steel case, measuring 39.5mm in diameter and 12.0mm thick. The self-winding watch with a water-resistance of 300 meters features a dual-crown design on the right side, with the secondary crown used for the internal rotating bezel, cleverly designed as a countdown timer. The matte black dial enhances legibility with bold, luminous markers and hands, while the Datsun emblem adds a nostalgic touch. The inner rotating bezel is segmented into alternating red and gray quarters, reminiscent of the vintage racing car's dashboard, and is marked with retro-style numerals to track countdown intervals, ideal for timing the start of a race or any event requiring precision. A discreet circular date window is positioned between 4 and 5 o’clock.

Housed behind a solid stainless steel case back engraved with the Datsun emblem lies Seiko’s in-house Caliber 6R55. This automatic movement beats at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers an impressive 72-hour power reserve, making it a reliable companion for extended wear. Complementing the motorsport aesthetic, the watch is paired with a perforated black leather strap. Limited to 2,500 pieces, the SPB517 is priced at $1,150.

Embracing the vibrant red-and-black color scheme long associated with Datsun’s racing heritage, this is the most visually striking model in the new Datsun 240Z-inspired lineup. A bold red inner track provides a dynamic contrast against the black dial, with some hands in blue highlighting the interplay of hues. One of the standout features is the case back, which bears a specially commissioned illustration of the Datsun 240Z, unique to this reference.
