Hanhart Introduces the Aquasphere Matte Black and Experimental Square by Square

Hanhart expands in two very different directions with the 300-meter Aquasphere Matte Black and the experimental Square by Square, a sculptural watch limited to six prototypes.

Hanhart expands its catalogue with two releases that showcase the breadth of the Black Forest brand’s design philosophy. The new Aquasphere Matte Black builds on the company’s growing dive-watch lineup with a stealthy monochrome appearance and professional specifications, while the Square by Square explores an entirely new case architecture that departs from Hanhart’s familiar pilot-watch and tool-watch aesthetic. Despite their contrasting concepts, both models underline the brand’s commitment to functional engineering, technical precision, and distinctive design.

The Aquasphere Matte Black features a 42mm stainless-steel case measuring just under 13mm thick and offering 300 meters of water resistance. A matte-black ceramic bezel and matching black dial give the watch a restrained appearance, while a silver-colored rehaut, applied hour markers, a red bezel marker, and a red-tipped seconds hand provide subtle visual contrast. Characteristic integrated lugs carved into the case flanks remain a defining design element of the Aquasphere collection.

Designed for serious diving, the watch is equipped with a unidirectional ceramic bezel featuring 60 clicks, a helium escape valve for saturation diving, and Super-LumiNova C1 GL X2 on the hands, indexes, and bezel. Depending on the production batch, the movement is either the Sellita SW200-1 or Soprod P024 automatic caliber. Both offer a power reserve of approximately 38 hours.

The Aquasphere Matte Black is available with three strap options. It is priced at $2,291 on Hanhart’s black Hook Strap, $2,240 with a black rubber strap, and $2,588 on a stainless-steel bracelet, all when converted to USD from EUR. All three feature a tool-free quick-change system.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is the Square by Square, an experimental shaped watch developed with Munich-based designer Marcus Wiedemann of Studio Supercreative. Originally conceived for the Dubai Watch Week x Grail Watch Design Competition, the project reached the finals in the “Most Out-of-the-Box, Innovative yet Viable Shaped Watch Design” category.

Rather than simply reviving a historic reference, the Square by Square reinterprets Hanhart’s heritage of shaped watches through a contemporary lens. Inspired by curved space-time and hyperbolic paraboloid geometry, its stainless-steel case defies conventional categories, blending rounded surfaces with tapering corners that extend beyond the short lugs.

The case measures 40mm from 12 to 6 o’clock, 38mm across, and 10.9mm thick. It is topped by a dramatically curved sapphire crystal that flows seamlessly over the case edges and offers 100 meters of water resistance.

Only six prototypes will initially be produced: three with deep-blue sunray dials and three featuring shimmering mother-of-pearl. Newly designed faceted, skeletonized hands and custom numerals reinforce the watch’s sculptural appearance.

Power comes from the automatic Sellita SW1000-1 b, which delivers a 46-hour power reserve. The Hanhart Square by Square comes fitted with a leather strap and is priced at $2,150 when converted from EUR.
