Introducing the Seiko Presage Classic Series Tradman’s Bonsai

Seiko draws on the Japanese art of bonsai for a new Presage Classic Series limited edition, pairing a textured deep-green dial with warm gold-colored details and a self-winding movement with a 72-hour power reserve.

Since its introduction in 2016, the Seiko Presage collection has explored Japanese craftsmanship and design traditions through mechanical watches. The latest addition to the Presage Classic Series takes its inspiration from an especially enduring element of Japanese culture: bonsai. The Presage Classic Series Tradman’s Bonsai Limited Edition HCC009J1 translates the appearance of a Japanese black pine into a refined wristwatch with a deep-green dial, gold-colored accents, and a compact 38mm case.

A Black Pine as Inspiration

For the new limited edition, Seiko collaborated with Tradman’s Bonsai, a Japanese collective that brings together traditional bonsai cultivation with contemporary design, fashion, and art. The starting point for the watch was a black pine viewed in moonlight, with its characteristic needles providing the inspiration for the dial color. Known as Matsuba-iro, the deep green is associated in Japan with good fortune and prosperity. Its subtly textured surface evokes the bark of the tree, while also creating gentle variations in the way light is reflected across the dial. The effect is deliberately restrained. Gold-colored hands and applied indexes stand out against the dark green background, while the absence of a date display keeps the composition clean. The result is a classic combination of colors that gives the watch a decidedly elegant character.

A Classic Presage with Refined Proportions

The HCC009J1 measures 38mm in diameter and 12.9mm in thickness. Its compact case features a gold-colored finish and a finely knurled bezel, adding another layer of texture to the design. A sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides protects the dial. Despite its dressier appearance, the watch retains the practical character expected from the Presage Classic Series, with water resistance to 100 meters. The Japanese watch is delivered on a seven-row metal bracelet and comes with an additional leather strap. The latter features a Sanko-matsu pattern inspired by the needles of the pine tree. The traditional Japanese motif is also associated with good fortune, extending the bonsai theme beyond the dial.

Automatic Movement with Three Days of Power

Behind the exhibition case back, Seiko's automatic Caliber 6R51 provides the mechanical drive. The movement offers more than 72 hours of power reserve, allowing the watch to run for roughly three days when fully wound. The movement incorporates Seiko's Magic Lever winding system and a stop-seconds function, enabling the wearer to halt the seconds hand when setting the time. Through the transparent case back, the movement becomes an additional element of the watch's mechanical character. The Seiko Presage Classic Series Tradman’s Bonsai Limited Edition HCC009J1 is limited to 2,000 pieces worldwide. It will be available from September 2026 for $1,350
