Day-of-the-Week Watches: Seven Ways to Show the Day

The day of the week appears far less often on a dial than the date, but these watches show how the display can play an important role in the overall design.

When it comes to date windows, Rolex is one of the first brands that comes to mind. The brand embraced the concept early and created an important classic with the Day-Date. According to Rolex, the original Day-Date of 1956 was the first calendar wristwatch to display both the date and the day of the week spelled out in full.

From the beginning, the Day-Date occupied a special place in the Rolex collection. Unlike other models, it was never offered in stainless steel, but exclusively in precious metals. The watch became closely associated with U.S. presidents and other political leaders during the 1960s and 1970s. Lyndon B. Johnson was photographed wearing a Day-Date on several occasions, helping the model earn its reputation as the “presidents’ watch.” The bracelet introduced for the model became known as the President bracelet.

On the Day-Date, the day-of-the-week display occupies a prominent position at the top of the dial, above the Rolex crown, stretching from roughly 11 to 1 o’clock. The seven days are printed on a rotating disk that advances by one position at midnight in synchronization with the date disk. Rolex currently offers the day display in 26 different languages.

Apart from Rolex, fully spelled-out day displays have become relatively rare. Brands such as Breitling and Omega offered models with similar displays in the past. Hamilton offers several collections with a curved day window at 12 o’clock, including Khaki Aviation, Khaki Field, and Jazzmaster.

Jean Marcel offers an unusual variation on the fully spelled-out day display. The Pforzheim-based brand, whose watches are manufactured in Switzerland, has specialized in unconventional display formats. Once you have seen the wave-shaped day display of the Tropical Diver, it is hard to forget. Together with the adjoining date indication, it blends seamlessly into the wave pattern of the dial.

Most Common: Three Letters

The most common solution is a window showing a three-letter abbreviation for the day. Although this format takes up less space and is therefore less visually dominant than a fully spelled-out display, it can still play an important design role.

A good example is the well-known ETA Valjoux 7750 chronograph caliber and related movements such as the Sellita SW500. With the three subdials positioned at 6, 9, and 12 o’clock, the open space at 3 o’clock is often better balanced by a day-date display than by a simple date window.

The Fortis Novonaut N-42 even adds a small practical detail: two arrows beside the displays indicate which direction the crown should be turned to adjust the day or the date. Of course, the day-date window is not limited to chronographs. It also appears on three-hand watches such as the Tutima Grand Flieger Airport and many others.

A. Lange & Söhne, meanwhile, demonstrates with the Odysseus that two letters are enough to identify the day: the window at 9 o’clock provides a visual counterweight to the outsized date at 3 o’clock. Because the date itself consists of two digits, Lange opted against a three-letter day window. The Odysseus’s dual digital-style display is powered by the self-winding Lange manufacture Caliber L155.1, which offers a 50-hour power reserve.

Pointer Displays

This type of display is often found on perpetual calendars. Vacheron Constantin uses the arrangement on the Fiftysix Day-Date, where a day-of-the-week subdial at 9 o’clock sits directly opposite the date display at 3 o’clock.

Bilingual Displays

Whenever a watch displays the day of the week, the question of language inevitably arises. Some manufacturers limit themselves to English, while many German brands also offer German-language displays. Certain models allow customers to choose the language, and Rolex, as mentioned above, offers no fewer than 26 languages.

Damasko takes another approach, offering a bilingual German-English display on selected models, including the DK36 three-hand pilot’s watch. This allows the wearer to decide which language to display.

Retrograde Displays

As with the date, the day of the week can also be shown using a retrograde display. Once the hand reaches Sunday, it snaps back to its starting position at midnight as the new week begins. A single retrograde indication already creates considerable visual impact; two opposing displays are even more striking. Roger Dubuis' first watch, introduced in 1995, was a bi-retrograde perpetual calendar, and the function once again takes center stage in the current Excalibur Bi-Retrograde.

Unconventional Day-of-Week Displays

Over the years, a number of brands have experimented with less conventional ways of indicating the day. On the Jean Marcel Quadrum III Dots, seven small windows represent the days of the week, turning orange one after another as the week progresses. Jean Marcel uses the self-winding JM A46 caliber, based on the ETA 2836-2, for the display.
