Is Swatch Teasing Its Next MoonSwatch-Level Collaboration?
This could be big
Swatch appears to be preparing another major release, and the brand is once again letting the watch community do much of the early work. In recent days, Swatch has published a series of cryptic teasers across its website, social media, and advertising channels. The visuals include comic-inspired graphics, bright colors, colored loops, and the phrase “X Swatch,” strongly suggesting that a new collaboration may be on the way. While no official partner has been announced, the campaign has already generated a wave of speculation online.
The timing is also part of the discussion. The date May 16 has appeared in connection with the teasers, and collectors have been quick to note that it falls on a Saturday, the same day of the week as the original MoonSwatch launch in 2022. That release, developed in partnership with Omega, became one of the most visible watch collaborations of the past decade, bringing Speedmaster-inspired design to a much broader audience through Swatch’s Bioceramic platform.
This latest campaign appears to be aiming for a similar level of attention. Some of the teaser imagery seems to show movement components, leading observers to speculate that the release could involve Swatch’s Sistem51 automatic movement or another mechanical concept. If accurate, that would point in a different direction from the quartz-powered MoonSwatch and Fifty Fathoms-inspired Scuba Fifty Fathoms collections.
At the same time, the visual language of the campaign is notably playful. Pop-art styling, comic-book graphics, and saturated colors have led some observers to suggest an artistic or character-driven collaboration. “Alice in Wonderland” has been one theory circulating in the community, with some reading the color palette and design cues as possible references to the story’s characters and visual world. For now, however, that remains unconfirmed.
The more headline-grabbing speculation concerns Audemars Piguet. Swatch’s use of the words “Royal” and “Pop” has prompted some collectors to draw a connection to the Royal Oak, particularly because of the typography used in the teaser materials. A Swatch x Audemars Piguet project would be a far more unexpected pairing than Swatch’s previous collaborations with Omega and Blancpain, both of which sit within Swatch Group. Audemars Piguet is independent, making such a collaboration less straightforward and, at this stage, still highly speculative.
Even so, the intensity of the discussion says something about the state of the watch market. The MoonSwatch demonstrated the power of translating a famous luxury-watch design into a more accessible format, and collectors have since wondered which icon might receive similar treatment next. Whether or not Audemars Piguet is involved, the reaction shows that the appetite for approachable, high-profile collaborations remains strong.
There is also the possibility that the new release is not tied to another prestige watchmaker at all. Swatch could instead be preparing a standalone collection focused on mechanics, movement architecture, or a broader pop-culture concept. The “X Swatch” language points toward a collaboration, but the brand has left enough ambiguity for multiple interpretations.
What is clear is that Swatch is again using a familiar formula: limited information, highly visual clues, precise timing, and a strong sense of anticipation. It is the same strategy that helped turn the MoonSwatch into a global phenomenon, and it has already succeeded in getting collectors, enthusiasts, and casual observers talking.
The full picture should become clearer on May 16. Until then, the AP rumors remain only rumors, though Swatch has once again managed to make a teaser campaign feel like an event of its own.
