Roaring Loud: Meet Grand Seiko's Tokyo Lion Tentagraph

It was one of the boldest timepieces introduced earlier this month at Watches & Wonders 2025, and a favorite of the WatchTime team: Grand Seiko's Tokyo Lion Tentagraph SLGC009. Defined by an angular, almost sculptural architecture, the Tokyo Lion design, first introduced in 2019 and inspired by Grand Seiko's lion enduring symbol of strength that goes back to its founding days in 1960, makes a powerful entrance in this technically and aesthetically striking chronograph, which measures 43mm x 15.6mm and is water-resistant to 200 meters.

The Tentagraph SLGC009 is part of Grand Seiko’s Sport Collection and marks the first time the Japanese brand has used Brilliant Hard Titanium for a chronograph case. This advanced titanium alloy is lighter, more corrosion-resistant, and significantly harder—and therefore more scratch-resistant—than stainless steel. Also brighter than the commonly used titanium grades, it brings out the Grand Seiko's celebrated signature Zaratsu polishing and hairline finishing that offers a fascinating play of light.

The design language is forceful and purposeful, with chronograph pushers featuring textured surfaces that match evoke the claws of a lion. The same goes for the diamond-cut hour markers that stand out from the beige dial whose horizontal line pattern reflect the mane of the predator flying in the wind. With their slightly recessed shape, the three sub dials, with the two chronograph counters executed in black, add depth to the overall design. The LumiBrite-coated hands and markers ensure excellent legibility even in low-light conditions.

Comfort has also been thoughtfully addressed: both the case back and the newly designed clasp—also crafted from high-intensity titanium—are slightly curved inward to better fit the wrist. The color-coordinated rubber strap, which perfectly matches the dial, features a textured inner surface that resembles a lion’s paw. This design not only adds character but also enhances comfort on hot days.

Inside beats Grand Seiko’s cutting-edge Caliber 9SC5, a chronograph movement with a vertical clutch specifically developed for the Tentagraph introduced at Watches & Wonders 2023. The automatic caliber runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 72 hours thanks to two barrels, even when the chronograph is on. With an impressive accuracy of -3 to +5 seconds per day, a magnetic resistance up to 4,800 A/m, and dual barrels, a vertical clutch, and Grand Seiko’s proprietary dual impulse escapement, this movement combines high precision with robust performance.

Pricing is marked at $16,400.
