Panerai Brings Its 1990s Luminor to 42mm

The trend toward smaller case sizes has reached another traditionally oversized tool watch. With the new Luminor PAM01710, PAM01711 and PAM01714, Panerai brings its distinctive 1990s case design to 42mm for the first time. It is the latest example of tool-watches with reduced dimensions while retaining the engineering, robustness and functional character associated with the original. The three models combine the distinctve Luminor architecture with the P.980 automatic movement, a three-day power reserve and 50-bar water resistance.

From Italian Navy Tool Watch to Civilian Icon

The story of these watches goes back to September 10, 1993, when Panerai presented the Luminor Ref. 5218-201/A and Luminor Marina Militare Ref. 5218-202/A, together with the Mare Nostrum Ref. 5218-301/A, aboard the Italian Navy destroyer Durand de la Penne (D560). The event marked a turning point for the Italian tradition brand: watches whose design and technology had long been associated with the Italian Navy were being introduced to the civilian public for the first time. The Luminor that emerged in the 1990s represented a departure from Panerai's earlier cushion-shaped cases. The original military watches had measured 47mm, but the civilian Luminor refined those proportions to 44mm. Its monobloc construction was defined by sharper, more angular lines, solid lugs, crisp edges and the characteristic curved crown-protecting bridge integrated into the case profile. That architecture became one of the signatures of modern Panerai. More than three decades later, the new models preserve the essential geometry while reducing the diameter to 42mm.

Three Distinctive Takes 

The PAM01710 features a polished and brushed stainless-steel case, a matte black dial with ecru Superluminova and a beige canvas strap. The PAM01711 uses the same steel case but pairs it with a matte green dial and matching green canvas strap. The PAM01714 takes a darker approach with a steel case treated with DLC. Its matte blue dial uses beige Superluminova and is matched with a blue canvas strap. The DLC coating is applied through a plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition process and is intended to increase resistance to wear, abrasion and corrosion while giving the case a deep black finish.

The dials are also a deliberate reference to Panerai's earlier civilian watches. Rather than using the familiar sandwich-dial design the brand is known for, all three models feature a single dial plate on which the typical Arabic numerals and hour markers are printed. Superluminova is then applied over the printed graphics, creating a slightly raised effect and a three-dimensional appearance when viewed up close. The design recalls the monolayer dials of Panerai's first civilian models.

There is no date display on the dial, while the small seconds remain at 9 o'clock. This detail has a functional origin: on historical Panerai watches, the subdial allowed frogmen to immediately verify that the watch was running.

P.980 with Three Days of Power

Inside all three references is Panerai's automatic P.980 caliber. The 4.2mm-thick movement comprises 177 components and 23 jewels and operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour. It provides a three-day power reserve and includes a stop-seconds function for precise time setting. A traversing balance bridge is designed to improve stability, while the movement is tested in six positions for chronometric performance. The finishing includes horizontally brushed top plates and an open-worked oscillating weight with blue Officine Panerai engraving. These are, however, hidden behind a closed case back.

500 Meters of Water Resistance

Despite the reduced diameter, the new Luminor retains substantial tool-watch specifications. All three references are water-resistant to 50 bar, equivalent to approximately 500 meters. Panerai pressure-tests each watch at its Neuchâtel manufacture, with testing exceeding the guaranteed rating by 25 percent.

The 42mm cases measure 13.8mm thick and weigh 126 grams. Each watch comes on a newly developed canvas strap with leather reinforcement around the holes. The watches are also compatible with Panerai straps featuring the PAM Click Release System and a 22/20 mm taper, including alligator, calf, rubber, textile, and bi-material options. Prices range from $6,700 for the PAM01710 and PAM01711 to $7,700 for the PAM017114.
