Race Ready: Seiko Launches Speedtimer Solar Chronograph for Tokyo 2025
When the World Athletics Championships return to Tokyo from September 13 to 21, 2025, Seiko will once again serve as the official timekeeper of the prestigious event. In celebration of this “home game,” the Japanese watchmaker unveils a new limited-edition chronograph: the Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph SSC955 WAC Tokyo 2025 Limited Edition. Seiko looks back on a long-standing relationship with the World Athletics Championships, serving as official timekeeper since 1987. For the 2025 event in Tokyo— a city with deep sporting significance— Seiko introduces a bold and functional tribute limited to 6,000 pieces worldwide.
At the heart of this commemorative model is a vibrant purple dial, protected by a domed sapphire crystal. The color is inspired by "Edo-Murasaki," a traditional shade of purple associated with Tokyo’s cultural past. Fittingly, this is also the official color of the 2025 World Athletics Championships. The dial features three contrasting black subdials and a date display between 4 and 5 o’clock. Seiko’s LumiBrite luminescent material on the hands and hour markers provides optimal readability in low-light conditions.
The stainless steel case measures 39mm in diameter and is 10.3mm thick, combining sporty proportions with everyday wearability. It’s water-resistant to 100 meters and features a titanium-carbide-coated bezel with a tachymeter scale for measuring speed. The metal bracelet is finished with alternating polished and satin surfaces and comes with a secure folding clasp.
Inside the watch beats Seiko’s V192 solar-powered chronograph caliber, offering a power reserve of up to six months when fully charged. The movement includes a 60-minute stopwatch with 1/5-second precision, a 24-hour display at 3 o’clock, a split-time measurement function, and a power reserve indicator.
The case back is engraved with the official World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025 logo, marking the watch as a true commemorative timepiece.
This limited-edition Speedtimer will be available starting August 2025, priced at $775.
