Citizen Marks 50 Years of Eco-Drive with Washi Dial Anniversary Edition
Limited to 650 pieces worldwide
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of its pioneering light-powered technology, Citizen this month introduces a new model within its premium The Citizen collection. The reference AQ4091-56W is issued as a limited edition of 650 pieces worldwide and reflects the brand’s ongoing pursuit of precision, durability, and refined Japanese aesthetics. First introduced in 1976, Eco-Drive eliminated the need for battery changes by converting light into energy, an innovation that remains central to Citizen’s technical identity five decades later.

CitizenThe defining feature of the anniversary model is its artistic dial, crafted from traditional Japanese Tosa washi paper and hand-dyed in chitose midori, a deep green hue associated with permanence. The color is achieved through a layered process combining yellow dye from ibuki kariyasu grass with indigo, resulting in a surface that reveals subtle variations and depth as light interacts with its texture. Washi was historically used in Japanese interiors to diffuse natural light. The luminescent dial features some gold-colored accents, including the seconds hand and the eagle emblem, as well as a date indication at 3 o'clock. The eagle motif is also present on the crown and case back.

CitizenThe 40mm case and bracelet are made of Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium, a material approximately 40 percent lighter and significantly harder than stainless steel. Treated with the brand's Duratect Platinum, the surface achieves a bright, silvery sheen while enhancing scratch resistance. The interplay of polished surfaces on the slim bezel and lugs with the brushed bracelet underscores the watch’s restrained yet refined character. A dual-sphere sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating ensures optimal legibility.

Additional technical features include impact detection, an automatic hand correction function, and an instant date change mechanism at midnight. Water resistance is rated to 10 bar. Priced at $3,095, the special edition is scheduled for release in May 2026 and will be limited to 650 pieces worldwide.
