Flight Certified: Omega Debuts Speedmaster Pilot
After launching a new Seamaster Diver 300M last week, Omega is now taking us to the sky with an all-new Speedmaster Pilot. There were rumors about this timepiece after it was teased as a model exclusive to U.S. military pilots. The tradition of military or specialized timepieces being followed by civilian versions is well-established in horology, particularly with pilot's watches. The Breguet Type XX springs to mind, as it was originally developed for the French Air Force in the mid-20th century, before later being offered as a civilian model.
The new Speedmaster Pilot that doesn't require a professional flight qualification draws inspiration from Omega's storied past of military pilot's watches that goes back to WWII when the brand supplied the Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm with the UK/CK2292, which was highly resistant to magnetic fields. However, the new timepiece is mostly influenced by the legendary Speedmaster introduced in 1957.
The stainless steel model with a diameter of 40,85mm delights with a matte-black grained dial with surprising colorful elements. One of the key features is the dual-register layout, which contrasts with the classic tricompax design of the Speedmaster Professional. At 3 o'clock, the combined 60-minute and 12-hour counter is designed to resemble a burn rate indicator, often seen in cockpits, and is highlighted by an orange minute hand. Meanwhile, the sub dial at 9 o'clock introduces even more vibrancy, with a blue horizon in the upper part as the backdrop for the bright yellow small seconds hand that sweeps across it. The tip of the central stop seconds hand mimics the shape of an airplane and is done orange in accordance with the chronograph minute hand.
There is also a date indication at 6 o'clock through a beveled window. The sub dials are also slightly beveled which highlights the functions and adds depth to the dial. The hour and minute hands, as well as the hour markers, are fitted with wide blocks of white, a green glow emitting Superluminova, ensuring perfect readability even during night flights. The bezel is secured with a ring made of matte aluminum, emphasizing its connection to the legacy of the Speedmaster through a "dot above 90" and diagonal at 70 on the tachymeter scale.
Precision is guaranteed by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 9900, certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) to meet the highest standards of accuracy, performance, and magnetic resistance. With a power reserve of 60 hours, the movement is housed beneath a metal caseback, which is engraved with the iconic Seahorse medallion of the Speedmaster and the water resistance inscription ("100m / 330ft").
The Speedmaster Pilot comes on a fully brushed, flat-link bracelet with Omega’s release adjustment. Alternatively, it is also available with a Kevlar-reinforced gray NATO strap with a steel buckle.
