New Livery: TAG Heuer Launches Monaco Chronograph Racing Green

© PR

Arguably one of the most famous watches of all time, especially in the world of motor racing, the TAG Heuer Monaco has made history in many ways. One of the first automatic chronographs in 1969, its groundbreaking square case not only offered a bold aesthetic, but also one of the first water-resistant designs of its kind. This watch became legendary when Steve McQueen wore it in the 1971 film Le Mans, forever linking the Monaco with the world of motor racing. A favorite of high octane enthusiasts and watch collectors alike, there have been a plethora of Monacos over the past five decades. The latest to continue this legacy of speed and precision is the Monaco Chronograph Racing Green.

While last year's Racing Blue edition was dedicated to historic French racing teams, the latest iteration is inspired by the famous British Racing Green, a color deeply associated with motorsports but also a staple in fashion and design. The first noted car with this automotive paint was a Napier 50 that won the 1902 Gordon Bennett Cup under Selwyn Edge, leading to the 1903 event being hosted by Great Britain.

The two square sub dials on the sun-brushed and luminescent silver dial and the leather strap in racing style display this deep and rich green color. Notably, a faceted baton marker at 12 o’clock features a vibrant yellow accent in tune with the chronograph’s yellow central seconds hand.

Aside from the colorway, the newcomer retains the classic look, shapes and proportions of the historic model, with a 39mm x 39mm square case that is water-resistant to 100 meters and equipped with an exhibition case back. It has been modernized, however, and is crafted in a Grade 2 titanium case with a matte sandblasted finish, which offers a cool, understated look that works well with the British Green topic and enhances comfort on the wrist thanks to the metal's lightweight properties.

The Monaco Titanium Racing Green is powered by the Caliber 11, which is based on a Sellita SW300 with a Dubois-Dépraz chronograph module. The beautifully finished self-winding movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and has a 40-hour power reserve.
