Seiko Presage Celebrates the Beauty of Tomioka Silk

Seiko expands its Presage Classic Series with four new models inspired by Tomioka silk, one of Japan’s most celebrated textile traditions. Featuring richly textured dials, a new 38-mm case size, and the automatic Caliber 6R51, the collection includes a limited edition of 2,000 pieces.

The Presage collection has long served as a canvas for Seiko’s interpretation of Japanese culture, craftsmanship, and aesthetics. From porcelain and enamel dials to traditional textile-inspired patterns, the series continues to translate centuries-old artistic traditions into mechanical watchmaking. Its latest chapter draws inspiration from Tomioka silk, a premium silk produced in the region surrounding the historic Tomioka Silk Mill in Gunma Prefecture, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important landmarks in Japan’s industrial history. The result is a quartet of elegant new Presage Classic Series models whose textured dials capture the flowing sheen, depth, and refinement of finely woven silk.

A Dial Inspired by Japanese Silk Craftsmanship

Leading the collection is a limited edition of 2,000 pieces featuring a dial that reflects the graceful drape and subtle luster of Tomioka silk. Finished with a pearl-like coating, the dial evokes the pristine whiteness of silk produced from a rare silkworm variety cultivated in Gunma Prefecture. Depending on the light, the surface reveals a delicate shimmer reminiscent of the luxurious fabric that inspired it.

The watch pairs its silk-inspired dial with a pink-gold-colored stainless-steel case and a dark brown leather strap sourced from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries. The color combination takes inspiration from the distinctive brick architecture of the Tomioka Silk Mill, while the textured bezel adds another layer of visual refinement.

Traditional Japanese Colors

Alongside the limited edition, Seiko introduces three regular-production models that share the same silk-inspired dial pattern while exploring traditional Japanese color palettes. The first features a shironeri dial, an elegant off-white tone inspired by refined silk threads. The second adopts wakatake-iro, a vibrant green shade long associated with traditional kimono dyeing. Completing the trio is a sakura-iro version, whose soft pink dial recalls the delicate hues of cherry blossoms. The shironeri and wakatake-iro models are fitted with steel bracelets, while the sakura-iro edition comes on a deep brown leather strap inspired by the trunk of a cherry tree.

A New 38mm Size

All four watches are housed in a newly introduced 38mm case with a thickness of 12.9mm, adding a fresh size option to the Presage Classic Series. Water-resistant to 100 meters, the cases feature dual-curved sapphire crystals with anti-reflective coating and transparent screw-down case backs that reveal the movement within. Powering the watches is Seiko’s automatic Caliber 6R51. Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), the movement offers a substantial 72-hour power reserve and features a magnetic resistance to 4,800 A/m.
