Citizen Marks 50 Years of Eco-Drive with the New Eco-Drive Photon

Citizen marks 50 years of Eco-Drive with the new Photon, a limited-edition release that turns light itself into both power source and design language, featuring a layered, color-shifting dial and a new movement capable of running for a full year on a single charge.

Citizen commemorates the 50th anniversary of its Eco-Drive technology with a new limited-edition model, the Eco-Drive Photon. The release looks forward and leans into abstraction, translating the science of light into a layered, highly technical dial construction, while introducing a new generation of light-powered movements.

At its core, the Photon is a conceptual object as much as it is a watch. The name itself references the fundamental unit of light, with that theme is carried directly into the dial. Two metal plates, each cut with ripple-like slits, are stacked to create depth and controlled exposure. Beneath them sits a structural color film, creating a pigment-free surface that produces shifting hues depending on illumination. As light passes through the upper layers, the dial changes continuously, enabling a dynamic effect that quickly changes with angle and environment.

This construction of the dial draws loosely from the double-slit experiment, a foundational concept in the study of light and wave-particle behavior. Here, that scientific principle is translated into a physical design language, working to reference and actively manipulate light. The result is a dial that feels animated without relying on traditional complications.

The case continues this forward-looking approach. Executed in Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium, it offers a combination of lightness and scratch resistance that aligns with the brand’s technical positioning. The form itself is a softened octagon, integrated seamlessly into the bracelet for a cohesive silhouette. At 39.6mm in diameter and under 10mm thick, the proportions remain accessible, despite the conceptual ambitions of the watch.

Two variations are offered. The BJ6560-53W pairs a silver-toned case with a vibrant, shifting dial and a yellow seconds hand, while the BJ6569-59X adopts a darker, more contrast-heavy approach with black and gold tones and a purple seconds hand. Both maintain the same underlying architecture, allowing the dial to remain the focal point.

Inside, Citizen introduces the new Eco-Drive Caliber E036. The movement delivers a full 365-day power reserve on a complete charge, reinforcing the brand’s long-standing emphasis on practicality and sustainability. Accuracy is rated at ±15 seconds per month, and as with all Eco-Drive watches, the system converts both natural and artificial light into energy, eliminating the need for battery replacement. The caseback protecting the movement is engraved with a 50th Anniversary Eco-Drive logo alongside an individual limited-edition number.

Limited to 5,000 pieces per model worldwide, the Eco-Drive Photon will launch in Fall 2026, with pricing set at $995 for the silver-toned version and $1,195 for the black-and-gold variant.
