The Aura of Patina: Zenith Presents the Chronomaster Revival A384 Tropical

Zenith revisits one of its most distinctive 1969 chronographs with a new “tropical” dial execution, combining vintage-inspired coloration with the El Primero 400 caliber.

With the Chronomaster Revival A384 Tropical, Zenith continues its exploration of historically grounded chronograph design. The model draws on the A384, one of the references introduced in 1969 alongside the debut of the El Primero, which was one of the first automatic, integrated high-frequency chronograph movement. The new edition adopts the proportions and architecture of the original while introducing a dial inspired by naturally aged “tropical” examples.

“Tropical” dials are the result of long-term exposure to light and environmental factors, which can cause originally dark surfaces to shift toward warmer brown tones. This process occurs irregularly, making such watches uncommon and of interest to collectors. Zenith does not replicate a specific vintage piece here but instead translates the general appearance into a controlled, contemporary finish. The dial is based on a white lacquered surface with contrasting brown sub dials in a so-called “chocolate panda” configuration. The tachymeter scale follows the same color scheme. Applied hour markers and hands are treated with beige-toned Superluminova designed to evoke the look of aged luminous material, while a red central chronograph seconds hand provides contrast.

The stainless steel case measures 37mm in diameter and retains the tonneau shape, pump pushers, and alternating brushed and polished surfaces of the 1969 model. Water resistance is rated to 5 bar. The watch is fitted with a steel “ladder” bracelet, a design originally developed by Gay Frères for Zenith in the late 1960s. Inside is the El Primero 400 caliber, a direct descendant of the original 3019 PHC. Operating at 5 Hz (36,000 vibrations per hour), it enables measurement to one-tenth of a second and offers a power reserve of approximately 50 hours. The movement, comprising 278 components, is visible through a sapphire case back.
