Purple Rain: Chronoswiss Celebrates 30 Years of the Opus

The anniversary edition captivates with a fully skeletonized dial that reveals the intricate architecture of its skeletonized chronograph movement, all framed by a vivid violet CVD-coated titanium case. A cool feature is the white leather strap transforms into a radiant violet hue in sunlight.

Few titles stir the imagination quite like ‘Purple Rain.’ Forever tied to Prince’s legendary ballad and the eponymous 1984 movie, it evokes passion, melancholy, and creative freedom. Emotion and innovation also define the history of Chronoswiss's Opus itself. Back in 1995, company founder and master watchmaker Gerd-Rüdiger Lang made a bold statement when he launched the world’s first serially produced skeletonized chronograph after the Quartz Crisis – a milestone that resonated deeply in the world of fine watchmaking. What the original Opus pioneered for mechanical transparency is today reimagined by the new Opus Purple Rain as a radiant, color-saturated spectacle on the wrist. Limited to just 30 pieces, the anniversary edition pays homage to this multiple award-winning classic. Adding a contemporary chromatic twist, it follows the brand's motto of "Modern Mechanic".

The skeletonized dial features a central chronograph seconds hand, a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock, small seconds at 9 o’clock, and a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, with a pointer date at 3 o’clock adding a traditional touch. Beating inside is the caliber C.741S, a skeletonized automatic chronograph based on the Valjoux architecture. Visible through the openworked design, it boasts black galvanic bridges and a violet CVD-coated, skeletonized rotor decorated with subtle Geneva stripes. The movement runs at 28,800 vph and delivers a power reserve of 46 hours.

Housed in a 41mm titanium case with 100-meter water resistance, the mechanical masterpiece showcases Chronoswiss’s prowess of CVD coating technology, which allows for precise, durable, and richly colored finishes. It goes without saying that it is equipped with a vintage-style onion crown and features a fluted case band. The UV-reactive strap adds yet another layer of surprise and playfulness, shifting from white to violet as sunlight touches its surface.
