Hands-on with the ProTek Series 2200 Automatic

The slogan on Protek's website says that the company is making 'all terrain watches,' which is hitting the nail on the head. Ever since its foundation, ProTek has been focusing on making robust watches for the most demanding conditions. While the Series 2200 Automatic is no exception to this rule, it does bring something else to the table as well: a design that can also be appreciated under far less demanding conditions.

One of the first things you notice when handling the Series 2200 Automatic, is the case. Not only does the 42mm large stainless steel case have a nice heft to it, but it is also beautifully machined in a design that is quite elaborate. All the edges are nicely softened, increasing wearing comfort, but also toning down the overall look of this ProTek into one with an easy going character. The clever design of the 120-click bezel adds a great deal of character as well as functionality and also sets the stage for the beautiful blue dial.

While that dial is also designed with functionality in mind, the hue that ProTek selected for this model shows a lot of play of light. This is amplified by its design of horizontal bars. It automatically draws your eyes to it but also elevates the watch to a point far beyond that of being a mere toolwatch. While it can play the part, this ProTek is a watch that you can use outside to cut wood in the snow and continue to wear entertaining guests in front of the fireplace.

ProTek also paid particular care to the caseback. It is decorated with the brand's logo, and also here, soft curves rule. This makes the Series 2200 automatic very pleasant to wear. The caseback is screwed down, which plays an important role in achieving the 200 meters water resistance of this watch. Inside ticks a high-grade Seiko/TMI automatic movement. ProTek deliberately selected this movement for the Series 2200 Automatic, as it is robust and reliable but also precise and easy to service. These are all hallmarks that come in handy and are highly appreciated when making an 'All Terrain Watch.'

The same goes for a hallmark feature of the brand, the Pro-Glo T25 Illumination System, which consists of tubes filled with luminous material. As it doesn't require charging, it will continue to do so for 25 years at a brightness 100 times that of regular photoluminescent lume. The tubes are placed as hour markers, but also on the hands. Their shape adds a nice detail, just as the tube at 12 o'clock is emitting orange light, while the rest is green.

This version of the Series 2200 Automatic is fitted with a strap made from Italian leather. Thanks to a special treatment is this strap water resistant. A sturdy buckle keeps it all in place. Still, for those who prefer a bracelet, ProTek has one available for the Series 2200 automatic as well, along with a wide variety of different dial colors. The version costs $750,- on a leather strap and $850,- on a metal bracelet.
