It’s Earth Month, and so it feels appropriate to mark the occasion with a closer look at one of the most sustainably driven brands in the market: Citizen. The watchmaker has long been known for its Eco-Drive technology, with the future-looking movements equipped with it being powered by light— any light— and never needing a battery change. In practice, this makes for a seamless watch wearing experience year-over-year, but environmentally assists in reducing waste in favor of innovative solutions, to the tune of 100 million batteries prevented from stacking up in landfills since creating Eco-Drive in 1976, equivalent to more than 3,600 Mount Everest summits.

Citizen’s latest watch to feature the technology and build upon it is the new Promaster Dive E365. The new timepiece is the latest execution of the popular Citizen PROMASTER Eco-Drive ref. BN0156-05E, and like that watch is also a saturation diver equipped with a helium escape valve and water resistance up to 300 meters. At the heart of the watch is the Citizen Eco-Drive Cal. E365 movement, able to run for an entire year— hence the 365 in its name— off a single, full charge. This ensures the watch’s function even in the harshest environments and low-light conditions, especially including those encountered by divers under the sea.

On the wrist, the new dive watch is familiar, professional-grade Citizen, measuring 46mm across in steel, featuring a distinctive case shape that includes as its signatures a 4 o’clock screw-down crown and an easy-grip bezel executed with a black insert for an incredibly bold aesthetic. A pair of hidden lugs also adds to the watch’s unique aesthetic, with the feature doubly allowing the watch to wear more comfortably across wrist sizes. The hidden lugs connect to a strap made from BENEBiOL™ PU, a plant-based polyurethane, which Citizen has adopted for its straps due to its resistance to hydrolysis and lower environmental impact.

Underneath an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, a glossy dial inspired by the dark hues of the deep ocean captures the attention and features a slight gradient towards the bottom of the dial. High visibility, applied indices with luminescent materials mark most of the hour positions, broken up subtly at the 4 o’clock position with a date indicator for daily utility. A pair of familiar, dive-ready Citizen hands are put to use for the handset, while a small cherry red accent is used for the “300m” script referring to water resistance. The dial notably features recycled materials throughout parts of its construction.

As mentioned, the watch is powered by the Eco-Drive Cal. E365 movement, though this movement is protected via a closed case with an image of a diving helmet pressed into the steel. The detail is both a nod to the universal symbol recognizable to professional divers everywhere, and further distinguishes the special watch within the brand’s modern catalogue.
