Two new takes on Glashütte’s chronograph tradition
Chronograph watchmaking has deep roots in Glashütte. More than 80 years ago, watchmakers in the Saxon town were already developing wristwatch chronographs that helped establish the region’s reputation for precision and technical innovation.
Now, Glashütte Original is continuing that tradition with two new additions to the Senator collection: the Senator Chronograph and Senator Chronograph Navigator. Both pair the manufacture’s contemporary Calibre 37-24 flyback chronograph movement with designs that draw on historic precision watches from Glashütte’s past.
The two watches share the same 41mm stainless-steel case and mechanical foundation, but take on different personalities through their dials and details. The Senator Chronograph Navigator is the more instrument-inspired of the pair, while the silver-white Senator Chronograph offers a more classically elegant interpretation.
The Senator Chronograph Navigator
The history of these timepieces comes into sharper focus with the Senator Chronograph Navigator. In the early 1940s, Glashütte watchmakers developed the UROFA Calibre 59 — the first modern Glashütte wristwatch chronograph. The new Navigator looks back to the pilot’s watches of that same era, where legibility, straightforward operation, and ease of use were central to the design.
The matte black dial is fitted with solid luminous Arabic numerals and engraved hour markers treated with Super-LumiNova. The hour and minute hands are luminous as well, while the central chronograph seconds hand, 30-minute counter hand, and small seconds hand are finished in white lacquer for strong contrast against the dark background.
The historical influence continues in the details. A prominent pilot-style crown provides an easy grip, while mushroom-shaped chronograph pushers sit at 2 and 4 o’clock. A tachymeter scale on the rehaut can be used to measure average speed. The stainless-steel case measures 41mm in diameter, 12.9mm thick, and 48.5mm from lug to lug. It is water-resistant to 5 bar and topped by a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides.
The Classically Elegant Senator Chronograph
The second model, the Senator Chronograph, uses the same basic architecture as the Navigator but takes its cues from a different chapter of Glashütte watchmaking. It draws on historic observation watches produced in Saxony during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These precision pocket watches were used for applications including maritime navigation, and their more formal character carries through to the new model.
At the center is a silver-white grainé dial, paired with solid-gold Roman numeral appliqués finished in blue and complemented by blued steel hands. The 30-minute counter and small seconds display sit symmetrically across the dial, while Glashütte Original’s signature Panorama Date appears at 6 o’clock in a white-gold frame.
The blue accents extend to the hands of both recessed subdials and the central chronograph seconds hand, giving the watch a lighter, more refined character while keeping the familiar Senator layout intact.
The Calibre 37-24 Flyback Chronograph
At the heart of both watches is Glashütte Original’s automatic Calibre 37-24, an integrated column-wheel chronograph built to bring its various timing functions into a compact architecture. The movement measures 34.2mm in diameter and 8mm thick, combining central chronograph seconds, a 30-minute counter, small seconds, and the Panorama Date. Its flyback function allows an ongoing timing interval to be stopped, reset, and immediately restarted with a single press of the pusher.
The mechanism runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers up to 70 hours of power reserve. A silicon balance spring provides resistance to magnetic fields and temperature fluctuations, while solid-gold regulating screws on the balance rim and Glashütte Original’s signature swan-neck fine adjustment allow for precise regulation.
The automatic movement is finished in the traditional Glashütte style. Through the sapphire crystal caseback, polished steel components, blued screws, beveled edges, and a three-quarter plate decorated with Glashütte stripes are all visible. A newly developed skeletonized rotor incorporates a 21-carat gold oscillating weight and the brand’s mirrored double-G emblem, echoing the signed crown.
Designed to Change with the Occasion
The Senator Chronograph Navigator is offered with black Louisiana alligator leather, a sand-colored synthetic strap, or a satin-finished stainless-steel bracelet. The Senator Chronograph is available with blue Louisiana alligator leather, the same sand-colored synthetic option, or a polished and satin-finished steel bracelet.
Each strap uses a tool-free quick-change system. For the first time, Glashütte Original has also introduced a quick-change mechanism for the folding clasp itself, allowing the clasp to be transferred between straps without tools.
The new Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph and Senator Chronograph Navigator are available worldwide through Glashütte Original boutiques and authorized retailers, priced at $16,100 on a leather or textile strap and $17,100 on a stainless-steel bracelet in the U.S.
