Tudor Goes Polar with the Latest Black Bay GMT

Among its releases at this year’s Watches and Wonders, Tudor expanded its Black Bay GMT collection with a new execution sporting a bright polar dial. Though the brand ensures that the dial is not quite white, as it has a silvery “opaline” sheen, it is a fresh approach to the Tudor sports watch lineup that usually prefers a black or otherwise dark-hued dial. Maintaining many of the design cues that have become standard for the Black Bay GMT, the new model also features the coveted “Pepsi” style bezel.

The exterior is relatively standard for a Black Bay, GMT or not, with a steel case measuring 41mm in diameter and a boxy, oyster-esque case. Its steel bezel is bi-directional with 48 notches, complete with 24-hour markers for its GMT functionality. The bezel sports a matte finish and borrows its Pepsi burgundy and blue colorway from other models in the Black Bay and larger Rolex families. A partially detached, oversized crown adds a note of aesthetic novelty to the look. To secure the watch, Tudor offers a three-link steel bracelet with a polished and satin finish or a black fabric strap adorned with burgundy accents.

For the dial, Tudor experiments with a vibrant opaline hue that incorporates slight silvery-grey hues into the nearly white backdrop. The geometric hour markers are enhanced with a dark-colored outline to ensure legibility, as are Tudor’s signature Snowflake hands. For GMT functionality, the hand is outlined in bright red, whereas the second, minute, and hour hands are all outlined in black instead. At 3 o’clock is a moderately sized date window with black numerals that match the minute track on the periphery of the dial.

As with the entirety of the Black Bay GMT collection, the new model is powered by the manufacture caliber MT5652. Beyond its integrated GMT function, it also has a jumping hour hand and retrograde date setting developed specifically for this collection. Aesthetically its bridges and mainplate have polished, sand-blasted surfaces and laser decorations. The self-winding mechanical movement also offers a “weekend-proof” power reserve of 70 hours.

The new Tudor Black Bay GMT is available via authorized retailers at a price of $4,300 on a steel bracelet and $3,975 on a fabric strap.
