Bigger and Blue: Nomos Introduces the Club Sport Neomatik 42

Way back in 2019, German watchmaker Nomos Glashütte made major waves with the unveiling of the Club Sport. Launched alongside a duo of Tangente Sport models, the model took familiar Club collection elements — an overall youthful design, a no-nonsense silhouette, and a highly legible dial — and boosted the sporty look with a newly upgraded 300-meter water resistant case with a slightly bulkier construction. The result was a fresh take on a classic Nomos watch that allowed even more versatile wearing situations, equipped for everyday as well as adventure.

Since its initial launch, the Club Sport has been available only with a black dial (below), but this year Nomos returned to the fan-favorite series to introduce the new Club Sport Neomatik 42, which adds to the collection its first blue dial.

Like its black-dialed predecessor, the new watch's case is constructed from stainless steel and measures 42 mm across, as reflected in the model's name. Its familiar stylized elements include a prominent signed crown, a rounded bezel with a polished finish, and an angular lug design that’s distinct from the better known, straight-lug style that Nomos uses in its many Bauhaus-inspired watches. In most regards, the 10.2-mm-thick watch is very similar in style to previous Club watches, but the larger diameter and 300-meter water resistance of the case — compared to the thinner and smaller cases in the collection that offer only 100m of water resistance — make it notably sportier.

Under the sapphire crystal, the blue surface of the dial has a sunray effect that plays in the light as the watch shifts on the wrist. The dial is highly legible, with its lume-accented hour markers and white outer minute ring, and features a few details of interesting contrast, like the proportionally large small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock, which has an indented, engine-turned look, and the slightly oversized date window at 3 o'clock. Gold-colored accents are used for the watch’s "1000ft" script toward the bottom of the dial as well as for the “neomatik” indicator above the center. These two small details further add to the creatively restrained design.

At the center of the dial, a pair of elongated, rhodium-plated sword hands determine the hours and minutes, each filled with Super-Luminova to assist in telling the time even while many feet underwater. The automatic Nomos Caliber DUW 6101 powers the watch, making it part of the neomatik series while providing a 42-hour power reserve. Like most if not all calibers from the brand, this one is finished meticulously in a style plainly unique at this price point for in-house movements. On display behind an expansive sapphire exhibition caseback, its skeletonized rotor has a striped finish.
