Smart Travels: Montblanc Sets Off with the 1858 GMT Automatic Date

While most GMT watches feature an additional hand to indicate the second time zone, the new Montblanc 1858 GMT Automatic Date boasts an intuitive and easy-to-read GMT display with no hands. Instead, the second time zone is presented via a red square that moves around the periphery of the dial.

This red square is positioned next to the fixed 24-hour bezel made of black or blue anodized aluminum. Thus, even in the second time zone, it is clearly visible whether it is day or night. An additional highlight of this sophisticated approach is the display of half hours. These increments are indicated by a red rectangle.

To accommodate sport enthusiast with Wanderlust, the timepiece offers a 42mm case with a water-resistance of 100 meters. The caseback is made of titanium and engraved with the continents and oceans, as well as the names of cities in all 24 time zones. The engraving can be personalized with the owner's hometown (in red) and time zone. As another cool detail, the Central European time, usually represented by Paris, has been replaced by Villeret, the Swiss headquarters of Montblanc.

The 1858 GMT Automatic Date is driven by the automatic caliber MB 24.33 and equipped with a metal bracelet or a rubber strap. Both can be swapped easily without the use of tools. Retail is $3,515 on a strap or $3,730 on a bracelet.
