Chopard L.U.C Essence of Shunga: Swiss High Horolgy Meets Japanese Lacquer Art
Unique piece for Time in Art
With the L.U.C Essence of Shunga, Chopard presents a one-of-a-kind timepiece that brings an unusual artistic expression of Japanese heritage to the wrist. The watch was created exclusively for Art in Time, the Monaco-based gallery specializing in independent and artistic watchmaking, to mark the opening of its new boutique in Tokyo’s Ginza district. Its Grand-Feu enamel dial features scenes executed using the elaborate Urushi lacquer technique. Two traditional forms of craftsmanship therefore come together in a single timepiece, both requiring patience, precision, and a high degree of manual skill. At the same time, the watch reflects the cultural exchange between Switzerland and Japan.

ChopardSix Scenes Revealed in Rotation
Measuring 40mm in diameter and just 8.1mm thick, the case is crafted from Chopard’s 18-karat ethical rose gold. Behind the enamel dial, a rotating disc carries six erotic scenes executed in the traditional Urushi technique and inspired by Shunga art. The individual motifs gradually appear through an aperture in the upper part of the dial as the disc rotates.
The term Shunga, which can be translated as “spring pictures,” refers to a form of erotic art that flourished particularly during Japan’s Edo period, from 1603 to 1868. Its imagery is not limited to eroticism, but also explores intimacy, relationships, beauty, and humor. Today, Shunga is recognized as an important part of Japan’s artistic heritage.
The dial itself also incorporates elements of Japanese culture. Against its dark blue, shimmering background, pink-gold Japanese numerals and a stylized tea house stand out harmoniously.
