Porsche Design Opens Timepiece Manufactory in Grenchen

With the relocation to Grenchen, Porsche Design reinforces its ambition to operate as a vertically integrated watch manufacturer— further embedding its watchmaking activities within the traditions and expertise of the Swiss industry while maintaining a distinctly automotive approach to design and engineering.

On March 19, Porsche Design inaugurated its new Timepieces Manufactory in Grenchen. The facility marks a relocation from the brand’s previous production site in nearby Solothurn and a significant expansion and consolidation of its existing capabilities within one of Switzerland’s most established horological regions. Conceived over three years and completed within 18 months, the new manufactory occupies a site with deep historical roots. Built in 1955, the building originally housed Eterna and later became closely intertwined with Porsche Design’s own history. In 1995, it was acquired by F. A. P. Beteiligungen GmbH, a company associated with Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and his son. Between 1998 and 2014, Porsche Design watches were produced here under license from Eterna, lending the location a rare continuity that now extends into its latest chapter.

Following extensive modernization, the facility has been transformed into a fully integrated competence center, bringing together development, engineering, assembly, quality management, and after-sales services. The move allows Porsche Design to strengthen control over its production processes while scaling its output and technical expertise. From a technical perspective, the manufactory meets contemporary production standards. ISO-classified cleanrooms, controlled temperature and humidity, and specialized lighting systems ensure precision at every stage of assembly. Production follows a sequential, efficiency-driven layout inspired by Porsche’s industrial principles, with optimized logistics and short internal distances. Sustainability considerations are integrated into the building’s operation.

At the heart of the strategy is the brand’s Custom-built. These COSC-certified timepieces form the centerpiece of the portfolio, with precisely crafted one-of-a-kind watches configured according to each customer’s personal preferences. Much like the specification of a sports car, every model combines engineering excellence and functionality within a clear, reduced design language.

At the same time, the manufactory is conceived as a “glass” facility, offering transparency into the watchmaking process. Exhibition spaces and a dedicated configuration lounge allow visitors to engage directly with the brand’s philosophy, while guided tours provide insight into the highly specialized production environment.

“For us, Grenchen is far more than a production site. In this historic building, we are giving the vision of our founder F. A. Porsche a home. Here, we bring together all of our expertise to develop and manufacture mechanical timepieces that set new benchmarks in innovation and customization. Every watch embodies this philosophy – consistently designed, technically sophisticated and crafted with the same passion as a sports car from Zuffenhausen.”

Rolf Bergmann, CEO of the Porsche Design Timepieces Manufactory
