Hublot x Jeff Koons: The Classic Fusion Goes Inflated

Hublot again takes its Art of Fusion philosophy into the realm of contemporary art with the new Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons. The collaboration transforms the familiar architecture of the understated Classic Fusion into a sculptural watch with rounded, inflated forms inspired by Koons’ celebrated Balloon Dog. Available in polished stainless-steel or polished anodized aluminum in red or blue, each version is limited to 200 pieces.

The Art of Fusion Meets Balloon Dog

Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog provides a particularly fitting starting point. First created as part of his Celebration series, the work takes the instantly recognizable form of a balloon animal and translates it into a permanent, highly polished object. Its appeal lies in the contrast between a playful, familiar shape and the precision of its execution. Koons has repeatedly explored this tension between everyday imagery and highly controlled, technically demanding objects, often using reflective surfaces, industrial materials and meticulous craftsmanship to alter the way familiar forms are perceived. For Hublot, this becomes a new interpretation of the Classic Fusion rather than a conventional artistic decoration.

A Classic Fusion with Inflated Forms

Almost every visible element of the 42mm case has been reworked. The traditionally sleek profile of the Classic Fusion gives way to convex surfaces, rounded edges and domed elements designed to create the visual effect of internal pressure. The sapphire crystal, titanium screw heads and dial are all shaped to reinforce the impression of an inflated object.

The balloon theme continues through numerous details. The crown resembles a balloon’s inflation valve, while a flexible rubber element at 10:30 evokes the tail of the Balloon Dog. The seconds hand incorporates a bas-relief Balloon Dog as its counterweight, and the applied hour markers and hands feature three-dimensional Superluminova inserts with an inflated appearance. Even the strap follows the same design language. Its rubber base incorporates a debossed metallic insert with a padded, inflated effect, while the deployant clasp has also been given rounded forms. 

Three Colors, One Sculptural Concept

The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog is offered in three distinct executions. The silver version combines polished stainless steel with a gray rubber tail and matching strap details. The red and blue editions use polished anodized aluminum, chosen for its ability to produce the saturated colors associated with Koons’ work. All three versions feature a full dial in the corresponding material and finish. Koons’ signature appears at 6 o’clock, in silver on the colored versions and in brilliant white on the stainless-steel model. The case measures 11mm in thickness and is water-resistant to 50 meters. The H-shaped titanium screws have domed, polished heads, continuing the rounded aesthetic throughout the case.

Manufacture Movement with Canine Details

And the Balloon Dog doesn’t stop at the case. It also finds its way into the mechanics. Hublot gives the HUB1710 automatic manufacture movement its own inflated touch with a polished rhodium-plated tungsten oscillating weight, whose rounded, voluminous form echoes the Balloon Dog theme. The 185-component caliber operates at 4 Hz and provides a 50-hour power reserve. Visible through the case back, it features anthracite ruthenium-treated bridges. 

Limitation and Pricing

Each of the three versions of the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons is limited to 200 pieces. The watches are presented in packaging that continues the concept, including a chrome-finished Balloon Dog with rubber-effect painted surfaces matched to the respective watch.

The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog is available through selected Hublot points of sale and will also be presented in selected galleries. Prices are $25,100 for all three versions.

MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons 

The second watch in the collaboration takes Hublot’s Art of Fusion in a very different direction. The MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons combines a transparent sapphire and titanium case with white-gold rings set with diamonds and blue sapphires, creating a precious miniature mechanical universe. At its center, Hublot introduces its first central tourbillon in an automatic watch, while two rotating rings indicate the hours and minutes with floating red and gray cubes. The edition is limited to 30 pieces.

A Precious Gem Built Around a Tourbillon

The 44mm MP-14 Origin is built around a transparent octagonal sapphire case combined with titanium components. The case measures 20mm in thickness and requires approximately 534 hours of machining. Its transparency exposes the unusual architecture inside, where several concentric rings create the impression of orbital paths. Two of these rings rotate to indicate the hours and minutes. Each carries a floating cube: the hour indicator is made of polished stainless steel finished with translucent red varnish, while the minute indicator is executed in polished gray stainless steel. Two additional rings remain fixed. 

Blue sapphires mark the quarters on the minute ring and the hours on the hour ring. The four rings are set with a total of 202 stones, comprising baguette-cut diamonds and blue sapphires for approximately 2.6 carats. Their arrangement draws the eye toward the center of the watch, where the tourbillon appears suspended beneath a transparent sapphire dome, which references Koons’ Gazing Ball works. It is hand-coated with translucent blue varnish by a specialist micropainter, adding another layer of color and reflection to the otherwise highly transparent construction.

The HUB9014 manufacture movement consists of 594 components and operates at 3 Hz. It provides a 60-hour power reserve. Instead of a conventional central rotor, Hublot uses a peripheral oscillating weight. This allows the movement to remain open and keeps the tourbillon and surrounding architecture clearly visible.

Sapphire as Structure

Transparency is central to the MP-14 Origin. Hublot has been working with sapphire cases since 2016, when it introduced the Big Bang Unico Sapphire, and has progressively developed the material into increasingly complex case constructions. Here, sapphire is not simply used to provide a view of the movement. It forms the architecture of the watch itself. The octagonal case is paired with a titanium case back, screws and Hublot’s characteristic case extensions at 3 and 9 o’clock. The sapphire bracelet continues the transparent construction, while a titanium deployant clasp secures it to the wrist.

The watch is presented in a specially designed display case conceived as an infinite mirror installation. LED lighting and a one-way mirror create the impression of additional depth, extending the spatial concept of the MP-14 Origin beyond the watch itself.

Limited to 30 pieces, the MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons is priced at $488,000.
