For Grand Seiko, the pursuit of precision has been a guiding principle since the brand’s first watch appeared in 1960. That quest reached a turning point in the late 1970s with the development of Spring Drive, a technology designed to combine the traditional energy of a mechanical mainspring with the regulating potential of electronics. Nearly half a century later, this legacy has taken a decisive step forward.

At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025, Grand Seiko unveiled the Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2, a movement that carries the designation U.F.A. — Ultra Fine Accuracy — thanks to its extraordinary annual rate deviation of just ±20 seconds, the most precise performance ever achieved by a mainspring-driven wristwatch. In addition, the movement provides a 72-hour power reserve and reveals refined decorative finishes that come to life when viewed through the sapphire case back.

Now, the newly launched Evolution 9 Collection Spring Drive “Violet Dawn”, SLGB005, brings this innovative caliber to the fore. Cased in Grand Seiko's Ever-Brilliant Steel, a super-stainless alloy prized for its resistance to corrosion and its bright white hue, the 37mm Evolution 9 design, which was introduced in 1967 in the 44GS, is distinguished by its bright hue, further enhanced by Grand Seiko’s Zaratsu polishing. The result is a distortion-free, mirror-like surface that alternates with a refined brushed finish to create a harmonious sheen. The case construction also ensures practical robustness, with water resistance to 10 bar and magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m, making the watch well suited for daily wear.

Perhaps the most charming aspect of the SLGB005 is its dial, which captures the fleeting beauty of dawn in winter. Inspired by the frost-covered forests near the Shinshu Watch Studio, the surface shimmers with a delicate, crystalline texture. Its gradient hue shifts from a deep violet at the perimeter to a luminous, icy tone at the center, evoking the moment when the first light of day filters through branches glazed with frost. Across this ethereal backdrop, the silver-toned Spring Drive seconds hand performs its perfectly smooth glide, a motion that symbolically reflects the calm, continuous passage of time. The Evolution 9 Collection Spring Drive ‘Violet Dawn’ is fitted with a bracelet in Ever-Brilliant Steel, secured by a three-fold clasp with push-button release, and is priced at $11,100.
