Arnold & Son Longitude Titanium 5°W Edition: A Maritime Tribute in Titanium and Gold

With the new Longitude Titanium 5°W Edition, limited to just 38 pieces, Arnold & Son pays homage to the pioneering marine chronometers created by John Arnold in the 18th century, timepieces that enabled sailors to navigate the world’s oceans with unprecedented precision.

John Arnold’s name is inseparable from the history of precision timekeeping. His marine chronometers were instrumental in solving one of the great scientific challenges of his time: determining longitude at sea. The story of the Arnold & Son's Longitude Titanium 5°W Edition traces back to Lizard Point, a dramatic headland on the southern tip of Cornwall, Britain’s last glimpse of land before the vast Atlantic. Just offshore lie the Scilly Isles, where, in 1707, a British naval squadron met a tragic fate due to navigational errors. The disaster prompted the British Admiralty to offer a reward of £20,000 in 1714 for anyone who could devise a precise method of measuring longitude, a challenge that would eventually bring John Arnold to prominence.

The Longitude Titanium 5°W Edition sets sail in a 42.5-millimeter Grade 5 titanium case, water-resistant to 100 meters and just 12.2 millimeters thick. Its softly curved surfaces and faceted edges reflect the sleek lines of contemporary sailboats. A fluted ring of 18-karat red gold between the case middle and the narrow bezel adds a warm contrast to the otherwise technical aesthetic, securing the slightly domed sapphire crystal.

The dial, in “Lizard Point Grey,” evokes the metallic hue of the North Atlantic near the 49th parallel, where sea and sky merge under the gathering autumn storms. Its vertical satin finish suggests the undulating rhythm of waves. At 12 o’clock, a power reserve indicator recalls the layout of traditional marine chronometers, accompanied by a small seconds sub dial at 6 o’clock. Skeletonized hour and minute hands move with precise grace, and their luminous coating ensures the time remains easy to read even in low light, such as aboard a ship at night.

Powering the watch is Arnold & Son’s automatic manufacture caliber A&S6302, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) with a power reserve of 60 hours. The transparent titanium caseback, fitted with anti-reflective sapphire crystal, reveals the movement’s meticulous finishing: palladium-coated, polished, and beveled bridges adorned with the Rayons de la Gloire pattern radiating from the center. Most striking is the 22-karat gold oscillating weight, engraved with a motif combining a ship’s silhouette and the shape of the navigation instrument the sextant, a poetic nod to seamanship and discovery.
