An Elegant Premiere: A. Lange & Söhne Debuts Zeitwerk Date in Pink Gold With Gray Dial

The Glashütte based luxury manufactory presents a new version of its famous mechanical digital watch with a ring-shaped date display that encircles the dial. It is the first model of the Zeitwerk watch family that combines the warm hue of pink gold with a gray dial, an elegant and striking combination.

In 2009, A. Lange & Söhne redefined the boundaries of fine watchmaking with the introduction of the Zeitwerk, a timepiece unlike anything the luxury brand had ever produced. Its precisely jumping digital time display in unmatched size, powered by an intricate mechanical movement, was a bold departure from the classical aesthetics typically associated with the time-honored Saxon manufacture. And yet, despite its avant-garde presentation of the hours and minutes, the Zeitwerk, which translates to "time works" or "time movement," was instantly recognizable as a Lange creation, from the meticulous craftsmanship of every detail to the technical prowess–both aspects for which Lange is legendary in collectors' circles. With its daring concept–some might call it even "disruptive"–the Zeitwerk captivated enthusiasts who value the fine traditions of genuine haute horlogerie but are equally drawn to new ideas brought to life by innovation and craftsmanship.

As of today, the product family has included some sophisticated high-end complications such as the Zeitwerk Minute Repeater and the Zeitwerk Decimal Strike, which is clad in Lange's proprietary Honeygold, as well as a particularly artistic Handwerkskunst edition and the luminescent Zeitwerk Honeygold Lumen, which reveals the intricate jumping hour mechanism at night.

Ten years after the premiere of this trailblazing watch with the patented jumping numerals mechanism that switches within a second (precisely 1,440 times throughout the day!), A. Lange & Söhne introduced the Zeitwerk Date, featuring an ingenious and very elegant date indication. Circling the dial, it is made of printed glass, depicting the numerals 1 to 31. A small colour segment on a ring beneath the date ring performs one step exactly at midnight. Hence, the current date appears in red and, over the course of a month, it moves around the dial, indicating the progress of the month so far. The date can be corrected with the pusher at 8 o’clock. Only one specialty: the switching impulse is generated when being released.

Six years after its debut in white gold, the Zeitwerk Date now makes a striking entrance in a warm pink gold iteration. Both versions are paired with a refined gray dial that presents the mechanical digital time display with exceptional clarity and poise. Hallmarks of Lange’s design language are proudly on display–from the characteristic power-reserve indicator marked “AUF” and “AB,” to the prominent small seconds sub dial. At the heart of it lies the distinctive “time bridge,” a functional component of the movement that visually frames the digital hours and minutes display as well as the subsidiary seconds. This structural element creates a seamless connection between the watch’s inner mechanics and its bold, architectural dial layout, a design speciality that has defined the Zeitwerk collection since 2009.

What appears so clear and intuitive on the dial of the Zeitwerk Date is, in fact, the result of extraordinary horological ingenuity. Behind the precisely jumping digital display lies a patented constant-force mechanism–a technical masterpiece that regulates the immense energy required to advance the jumping numerals with absolute precision. This controlled burst of power is drawn from a powerful twin mainspring barrel, while a finely engineered fly governor absorbs excess energy, ensuring that the mechanism is both protected and perfectly synchronized. Every 60 seconds, the constant-force mechanism delivers an exact switching impulse to the numeral discs, enabling the display to advance smoothly and reliably. Positioned between the mainspring barrel and the balance wheel, it also plays a vital role in maintaining chronometric stability by feeding the balance with a steady, consistent flow of energy throughout the entire power reserve of 72 hours.

At the heart of the Zeitwerk Date beats the hand-finished manufacture caliber L043.8, a manually wound movement that operates at a steady 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 hertz). Thanks to its twin mainspring barrel, the it delivers an impressive power reserve of three days. Housed within a 44.2mm pink gold case with a height of 12.3mm, the twice-assembled movement is revealed through a sapphire-crystal case back, offering a captivating view into the heart of Lange's craftsmanship. Comprising 516 meticulously assembled components, the caliber showcases a wealth of traditional finishing techniques and technical artistry. Among the many highlights are the solarized ratchet wheel, engraved with the A. Lange & Söhne signature, and the finely shaped bridge of the constant-force escapement, and the hand-engraved balance and escape-wheel cocks, all striking visual elements within a movement that unites mechanical precision with exceptional beauty.
