Union Glashütte continues to honor the legacy of its founder Johannes Dürrstein with the introduction of the 1893 Johannes Dürrstein Edition "Double Moon Phase." Established in 1893, the Saxon manufacture was built on Dürrstein’s vision of making high-quality Glashütte precision watchmaking accessible to a wider audience. The latest addition to the collection reflects that philosophy while combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary movement technology. Equipped with a newly developed hand-wound caliber and featuring a complete calendar including a double moon-phase display, the watch brings one of classical watchmaking’s most poetic complications into a modern context.

One Moon, Two Perspectives

At the heart of the new model is its double moon-phase display, a complication inspired by historical pocket watches and not often seen in contemporary wristwatches. Unlike conventional moon-phase displays, which depict the lunar cycle as viewed from the Northern Hemisphere, this mechanism simultaneously shows the moon’s appearance in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Positioned at 6 o’clock, the display features two gold-hued moon discs framed by a field of small stars, creating the visual centerpiece of the dial. The finely grained champagne-colored dial echoes the appearance of traditional friction-silvered pocket watches. Engraved Roman numerals, blued hour and minute hands, and a pointer date displayed on the rehaut underscore the watch’s understated elegance. The day and month windows are placed beneath 12 o’clock, preserving the balanced symmetry of the design.

A New Hand-Wound Caliber

Driving the watch is the new hand-wound Caliber UNG-58.S2, developed in collaboration with ETA. The movement offers a power reserve of up to 60 hours, features an antimagnetic silicon balance spring, and includes a hacking seconds function for precise time-setting. In keeping with sophisticated Glashütte decoration tradition, the caliber is fitted with a three-quarter plate that is manufactured, decorated, and assembled in Glashütte. The movement can be viewed through the sapphire crystal case back.

Case, Strap, and Price

The 1893 Johannes Dürrstein Edition Double Moon Phase comes in a 41mm stainless-steel case with a thickness of 12.23mm. As is typical for Union Glashütte, the watch is water-resistant to 100 meters, making it suitable for everyday wear. It is fitted with a brown leather strap embossed with a crocodile pattern and secured by a double-folding clasp and priced at €3,100 or approximately $3,550 when converted to USD.
