Introducing the Grand Seiko Elegance Collection SBGW325 “Arabic Blue”

Arabic numerals are an uncommon sight on Grand Seiko watches. The Japanese tradition brand is better known for its characteristic sharp, faceted hour markers, which have become a defining element of its signature Grand Seiko style. With the SBGW325  “Arabic Blue,” part of the Elegance Collection, the watchmaker takes a different approach, reviving the distinctive numerals of the SBGW003. Introduced in 2001, this watch was equipped with the Caliber 9S54, Grand Seiko’s first manually-wound 9S movement. The new SBGW325 echoes the original with its prominent Arabic numerals paired with a deep navy dial, making the historical connection immediately apparent and offering an interesting twist. The colorway draws inspiration from Japan’s traditional indigo-dyeing culture. The hour and minute hands, by contrast, retain Grand Seiko’s characteristic faceted design. The watch also forgoes a date display, keeping the dial, which is protected by a  box-shaped sapphire crystal, clean and balanced, as it befits a dress watch.

Zaratsu-Polished Steel Case

The stainless steel case measures 37.3mm in diameter, 11.7mm in thickness and 44.3mm from lug to lug. Its round profile and gently sloping lugs create a restrained silhouette, while Grand Seiko’s Zaratsu polishing produces the distortion-free mirror-finished surfaces that are sought-after by the growing fan community of the Japanese brand. The narrow bezel provides a broad opening for the dial, giving its deep navy surface and Arabic numerals more visual space.

Manual-Winding Caliber 9S64

The SBGW325 is powered by Caliber 9S64, a manually wound movement containing 24 jewels and offering a 72-hour power reserve. Its torque gradually decreases as the mainspring unwinds, helping maintain stable accuracy throughout the running period. Grand Seiko specifies an accuracy of +5/-3 seconds per day when static. As is de rigueur for Grand Seiko, the watch also offers magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m. As with other models in the Elegance Collection, the finely finished movement can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back, which also reveals the individual number of each watch in the 600-piece limited edition.

Hand-Dyed Indigo Strap

The color of the dial continues onto the crocodile leather strap, which is hand-dyed using traditional hon-ai natural indigo techniques. Skilled craftspeople dye the leather by hand in a meticulous process designed to produce a rich, deep-navy hue that complements the dial.

An interchangeable calf leather strap is included as an alternative. Its softly grained surface and supple construction offer a different look and feel. Both straps are made from leather sourced from tanneries certified by the Leather Working Group (LWG), which Grand Seiko is a member of. The SBGW325 “Arabic Blue” is limited to 600 pieces worldwide and priced at $5,800. The watch is available for pre-order via Grand Seiko.
