A Journey Back in Time

More than a century after Hamilton introduced its first cushion-shaped watches, the American-rooted brand revisits the distinctive design language of the 1920s with the American Classic Cushion Mechanical. The new collection takes its cues from the Cushion Plain and Cushion Engraved models of 1926, translating their geometric shape, balanced proportions, and Art Deco influences into a contemporary collection of timepieces with small seconds.

Available in two case sizes and a range of dial executions, the collection retains the character of its historical predecessors while incorporating modern mechanical technology. The hand-wound movement inside also has roots in the past: the new Caliber H-42 is based on the ETA 7001, whose design can be traced back to the Peseux 7001 introduced in the 1970s. Hamilton has updated the movement with a longer 57-hour power reserve and a Nivachron balance spring for improved resistance to magnetic fields. A sapphire crystal in the caseback offers a view of the decorated movement.

Two Case Sizes

The American Classic Cushion Mechanical comes in 30mm and 34mm case sizes. The smaller version measures 30 × 30mm and is 8.1mm thick, while the larger model measures 34 × 34mm with the same slim profile. The compact dimensions reflect both the proportions of the original watches and the renewed interest in smaller watch sizes.

Depending on the version, Hamilton uses stainless steel or stainless steel with a 3N gold-tone PVD coating. The 34mm collection also includes a version with an engraved case, adding another historical detail to the lineup.

Art Deco-Inspired Dials

The dials further emphasize the collection’s historical inspiration, with different colors and finishes ranging from sandblasted beige and enamel-style white to black. With one exception, the models feature Arabic numerals whose typography recalls the lettering found on early advertising posters. A railway-style minute track follows the contours of the cushion-shaped case, while the small seconds at 6 o’clock and cathedral-style hands reinforce the vintage character. Super-LumiNova on the numerals and hands adds a practical contemporary touch. All versions offer water resistance to 50 meters and are paired with leather straps.

Prices start at $995 for the stainless-steel versions, while the models with 3N gold-tone PVD coating are priced at $1,095.
