Grand Seiko Renews the Evolution 9 Collection

Grand Seiko is renewing the core Evolution 9 Collection with nine updated references, revised nature-inspired dials, improved bracelets, micro-adjust clasps, and broader use of its ±20-seconds-per-year Spring Drive U.F.A. Caliber 9RB2.

Grand Seiko is giving the core of its Evolution 9 Collection a substantial update for 2026, refreshing nine references across the brand’s flagship design family. The new lineup includes five Spring Drive models powered by the high-accuracy Caliber 9RB2 and four mechanical models using the Hi-Beat Caliber 9SA5. While the update does not radically alter the Evolution 9 formula, it does bring several meaningful changes to the collection, including newly revised dials, Ever-Brilliant Steel cases and bracelets on most stainless-steel models, a three-step micro-adjustment clasp, and a new 37mm size for one of the Lake Suwa Spring Drive references.

The Evolution 9 Collection has become one of Grand Seiko’s central modern platforms, positioned around the brand’s current design language with an emphasis on legibility, wearing comfort, and highly finished cases. For this latest update, Grand Seiko is reintroducing a mix of familiar dial concepts and new executions, while also reorganizing the core lineup around five 9R Spring Drive references and four 9S mechanical references.

Most of the new models maintain the established 40mm case diameter, though the new SLGB015 brings the Lake Suwa dial option into a smaller 37mm case. The Spring Drive models measure 11.7mm thick in 40mm form, while the 37mm SLGB015 measures 11.4mm thick. The mechanical 9SA5 models are all 40mm in diameter and 11.7mm thick. Across the lineup, the cases are fitted with box-shaped sapphire crystals with inner anti-reflective coating, screw-down crowns, see-through screw casebacks, 100 meters of water resistance, and magnetic resistance of 4,800 A/m.

Seven of the nine models are made in Ever-Brilliant Steel, Grand Seiko’s proprietary bright, highly corrosion-resistant stainless-steel alloy, while two are made in High-Intensity Titanium. The titanium references are the black Lake Suwa Spring Drive SLGB007 and the black birch-inspired mechanical SLGH029. The Ever-Brilliant Steel models include the remaining four Spring Drive references, SLGB009, SLGB011, SLGB013, and SLGB015, as well as the mechanical SLGH031, SLGH033, and SLGH035.

A practical update comes through the bracelet and clasp. The new bracelets have a greater degree of tapering than previous versions, and each model is equipped with a three-step micro-adjustment clasp. The system allows tool-free adjustment in 2mm increments, giving the Evolution 9 bracelet a finer degree of day-to-day fit control than before.

The dial updates are the clearest visual change to the collection. Among the five Spring Drive references, Grand Seiko returns to several themes tied to the Shinshu Watch Studio in Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture. The Lake Suwa dial appears in a lighter blue tone meant to suggest morning light reflecting off the lake’s surface; this version will be offered in both 40mm and— for the first time in this renewed core lineup— 37mm. Grand Seiko is also introducing a black Lake Suwa dial, a new colorway for the design, intended to evoke the lake under moonlight.

The other two Spring Drive models continue natural themes from the region around the Shinshu Watch Studio. One uses the white birch forest motif, while the other draws on the Atera Valley— a scenic area in Nagano known for its clear blue-green water. Together, the five Spring Drive references give the 9R side of the Evolution 9 Collection a more complete range of dial options while bringing the U.F.A. movement into the permanent core offering.

The four mechanical models are similarly refreshed around Grand Seiko’s Shizukuishi watchmaking themes. The white birch dial returns, retaining the same pattern as the original model but now paired with an Ever-Brilliant Steel case and bracelet and the updated micro-adjustment clasp. Two additional birch-pattern models are also renewed: a black-dialed version in High-Intensity Titanium and a green-dialed version in Ever-Brilliant Steel. The fourth mechanical model is inspired by the Genbi Valley near the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, using a textured light blue dial intended to recall the valley’s clear summer stream and rock formations.

Inside the five Spring Drive models is Caliber 9RB2, Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive U.F.A. movement. U.F.A. stands for “Ultra Fine Accuracy,” and the movement was introduced in 2025 as a new high-precision expression of Spring Drive. Its annual accuracy is rated to ±20 seconds per year, or approximately ±3 seconds per month, which Grand Seiko says makes it the most accurate mainspring-powered wristwatch movement currently on the market. The distinction here is not that Grand Seiko has created a second U.F.A. caliber for these watches, but that the 2025-introduced 9RB2 is now being deployed across the renewed core Evolution 9 Spring Drive lineup.

The technical difference between the U.F.A. movement and standard Spring Drive calibers is in how tightly Grand Seiko controls the quartz-regulated side of the Spring Drive system. In Caliber 9RB2, both the crystal oscillator and integrated circuit are vacuum-sealed to reduce the effects of temperature, humidity, static electricity, and light. Grand Seiko also stabilizes the oscillator through an aging process, measures each oscillator’s frequency at multiple temperatures, and programs that data into a low-power IC for precise thermo-compensation. The movement also includes a regulation switch that can be used during after-sales service to correct long-term deviations in accuracy. Caliber 9RB2 is automatic, has 34 jewels, and offers a 72-hour power reserve.

The four mechanical models are powered by Caliber 9SA5, Grand Seiko’s flagship automatic Hi-Beat movement. Operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 5 Hz, Caliber 9SA5 offers a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day and an 80-hour power reserve. That combination is made possible through Grand Seiko’s Dual Impulse Escapement and a twin-barrel system. The movement also uses a horizontal gear-train layout to help keep the caliber slim, while the bridge shape is inspired by Mt. Iwate and the nearby Shizukuishi River.

The five Spring Drive U.F.A. models will be available through Grand Seiko Boutiques and select retail partners worldwide beginning in September 2026. The High-Intensity Titanium SLGB007 is priced at $11,400, while the Ever-Brilliant Steel SLGB009, SLGB011, SLGB013, and SLGB015 are priced at $10,200.

The four mechanical Hi-Beat 36000 80 Hours models will follow in October 2026. The High-Intensity Titanium SLGH029 is priced at $11,400, while the Ever-Brilliant Steel SLGH031, SLGH033, and SLGH035 are priced at $10,200.
