A Shark on the Move: Introducing the Bremont Waterman Apex
Last month, British maker Bremont debuted the latest addition to its Supermarine dive watch family. Dubbed the Waterman Apex, the model is a follow-up to the 2018 limited edition Supermarine Waterman, that watch largely designed with influences from big-wave surfer, Mark Healey. Following the trend, Bremont is continuing to lean into the notion of what it means to be a “waterman” with this latest model, this around time partnering with a sportsman and big-wave surfer, Laird Hamilton, for the watch's testing and launch.
On the wrist, the Waterman Apex measures 43mm across and is 16.5mm in height. Opting for a steel case built for utility in the brand's signature "Trip-Tick" silhouette, its scratch-resistant sapphire bezel insert signals its travel versatility via 24-hour markings. A 500m water resistance alludes to the day job of the sports model, with this significant rating alongside the unidirectional movement of the bezel, an automatic helium escape valve, and a sturdy, big crown all working together in establishing the watch's diver credentials.
Underneath the sapphire crystal, a high legibility, contrasting display is on view, with a white outer minute track resting in tandem with the matte black inner dial. Bremont opts for nickel-plated, applied indices and red and blue detailing to further the style and visibility of the Waterman, while a date indicator placed at the 3 o'clock position adds some daily utility. At the center of the dial, signature Supermarine hands indicate the passing hours and minutes, while a red-colored hand counts the seconds and a light gray-blue detailed arrow pointer marks the second (and potentially third) time zones.
Perhaps unusual for a dive watch with such compact capabilities is an exhibition caseback that reveals a modified Caliber 11 1/2’” BE-93-2AV, the automatic chronometer capable of a 42-hour power reserve.
Being launched in partnership with Laird Hamilton, the new Supermarine Waterman further benefits the non-profit Bimini Shark Lab in its sale. Taking influence from both Hamilton and the Lab, the limited edition diver includes shark-inspired motifs throughout, including in a stylized inner sectoring of the dial, a commemorative rotor for the movement, and via the particular use of gray-blue tones for the watch throughout.
The Bremont Waterman Apex is a limited release of 250 pieces, with each retailing for $5,095. As mentioned, and furthering the aquatic attributes that inspired the Waterman Apex, sales of the watch will be supporting oceanic research for Bimini Shark Lab, a non-profit organization operating in the US and the Bahamas that focuses on shark research and conservation efforts.
